I have posted this ? before and every answer I got was to use double sided tape.Problem is I want to do it the hard way and install them the way the factory does. Can anyone give me the procedure? I am willling to spend the time nessasry to do the job the way i want it done. I would just like to hear from someone who has done it the "right way" ( no flames please I am just a fanatic when it comes to this car and i need to do it right!
thanks
Just did my wife's 2001 C5. I've heard you can get a template from the dealership but not sure. I also saw that West Coast sells the kit with a template. I did not have a template and ended up taking numerous measurments at the dealership. All in al it came out fairly well. If you can get a template it should go fairly easy. I have a compressor and borrowd my sons air tools and used his air jig saw. Cut through the car in a nano second.
not to WORRY you are only cutting 2 LARGE holes in a $40,000+ car!
You will need to remove the front facia, remove the bucket that surrounds the foglights and then use the screws that hold the buckets in to bolt down the screens in place. While you are there you can hardwire a set of PIAA 1100X lights... it is real easy and it will enhance your lighting system. All of this takes about 2.5 hours to do and is much easier if you have 1 or 2 people helping you. I did all of this to mine and I am very happy with the results.
Oh I almost forgot to tell you that you should paint the heads of the screws so you dont see them inside the screens from the outside looking in.
You could also just apply some silicone adhesive around the edge of the Z06 screens. If you do not want to remove portions of the car. I did that with the front screens and so far so good. Stuck in there tighter than a Bulls Butt is Spring Time.
Any problems with dirt or water should I drill out the plastic pieces in the opening before installing the screens? Just wanted to get some cool air to the engine...
Oliver5- I cut the plastic pieces out with razor knife before installing the screens. I used double sided tape also. But on the back side i used small bungee cords connected to the holes in the screens. I routed them around the front frame rails to ensure the screens would not fall out. Cheap & easy insurance. If you are still interested in installing the screens like factory, E-mail me and I will send you a blow by blow discription of how to do it. Its really pretty easy. I installed cold air screens which I understand install the same way as the factory Z06 screens. Should be with 3 fasteners. Two horizontal and one verticle on the outside. Trust me, I can save you alot of trouble.
Mash :)
I felt the same way as you. There's a factory clip pack for the screens and it's all you need to fasten them; no drilling or screws. These clips are a tight fit and it will take a screwdriver to pry them apart if you ever want to remove them. The hardest part is getting the brake ducts out of the way. I followed the factory manual and a little common sense for removing the plastic backings and installing the screens. No taping needed. Took me 4 hours but would take half that time if I were to do it again. It's going to take some cussing and hard physical effort to yank the brake ducts out of the way but don't be concerned about breaking them because it's made of very tough plastic. :chevy

My opinion is, if you want to do it right, to install the Z06 screens with bolts.
Also, use the opportunity to remove the fog light housing, and install a set of PIAA's
If your a perfectionist, just take it to the dealership and have them installed. .Fog lights need to be removed etc, etc. There is more to it than just using some double sided tape. This is a Corvette we are talking about, not some Camaro or Mustang. The original black inserts pop out and the cold air screens bolt into the same holes.
thanks to everyone for your input! The screens are in, the first one took me about 3 1/2 hours the second one was done in less than one hour. I installed them with the info provided from a few different posts and e- mails I received . Heres how I did it , first you remove the lower ouside spoiler (4screws 7mm) then remove the small black access panel that is directly under the spoiler you just removed(4screw 7mm). that allows you access to the fog light assembly. I did not have ramps or a jack to get the vette up on so this was all done on the ground. You need to look into the opening of the panel you just took off and you will see the single bolt holding on the fog lamp you have to remove that bolt 10mm I did this by feel as I could not see into the panel at the same time but it was pretty easy.when you remove the bolt just lay the fog lamp down on the inside off the facia. Next you need to push the front brake air duct out of the way to reach one of the bolts holding on the original insert this very easy you just push it backwards and down and it will be out of your way for the rest of the install . the next part was tricky as you will have to remove the bolts on the insert by feel I used a mirror to locate them and then used a rachet to loosen and take them out ,it is a tight squeeze but really not that hard, next you will have to look in again or feel for the wires that are connected to the insert find the two plastic wire clips at each end of the original insert and push them out of the holes they are in I used a pair of needel nose pliers and they pushed right through.once this is done the inserts will be free and you are about 3/4 done.
next I took the z06 screens and put them in the openings then I reached in from the back side and felt for the two elongated holes in the screens and and drew inside each one with a permanant felt tip marker make sure the screens are pushed all the way into the openings before you make the marks with your pen. then remove the screens and you will see the two marks that you made you need to put a small hole in the very center of each one. I used an eye hook that I screwed into the mark, it wasclose to the same diameter as the screws you take out of the front spoiler and plastic cover. try to get something about that size to keep the fit nice and snug. trying to get through that rubber is a little tough but just keep at it and it will screw right thru.
now this part I came up with after looking at a picture on the computer in my local chevy dealers parts department. You will need 4 of the metal clips that hold the radiator shroud on at the bottom also you will need 4 of the screws that do the same. next you hold the screens in place and push the clips over the elongated holes in the screens I used a screw driver to hold the clip open then slipped it right over the screen and facia directly over the hole I put in the rubber facia then I put the screws into the clips and those suckers are in there as good as factory if not better . then just push the wire clips into the two holes on each screen put the fog light back up th eway you tookit off move your brake duct back into place put your cover and spoiler back on and your done. I did not mention that I also removed the radiator shroud but I assume you know about that already if not you can find many posts on the how to, the only tricky part are the two plastic screws that hold the shroud to the radiator.I just popped them off and order new ones from chevy about .80each because i pretty much ruined them trying to get the metal clips off I figure there must be a special tool to take them off but it has to cost a hell of a lot more than the 1.60 for the two new screws. But thats how I did it and I am very happy with the job , I know they are a hell of alot more secure than just tapeing them in and I now have the option of using my Halltech or for the bad weather Ican put the 02 z06 air cleaner lid on and get all the fresh air the lid can handle . Hope this helped some else with the install its not that tough and the screens really finish the front of the car and the bonus is opening up the front end for the air flow . :yesnod:
does anyone have an idea how much it would cost to have a dealership
install the factory z06 screens ( labor only). assuming this would be
quite expensive does anyone know someone in the dallas/ft. worth area
who might be able to do this as well instead of paying the high prices
at the dealership.
