I want to find out whether my GM dealer is shooting me straight on hours GM pays.
How many hours does GM pay to pull and re-install the engine? Would these hours paid include any other services
such as disassembly of heads, intake etc.....? Thanks in advance for the info! :flag
I assume that you are talking about warranty time???A ring job pays approximatly 16 hours under warranty. An R&R pays about 12 hours...Generous,arent they???They would have to submit for OLH (other labor hours) for disassembling and inspection...Add 10 hours to that, and that is what you could expect to pay out of pocket (chilton time) :yesnod:
Actually I'm talking about outside of warranty. For example I'm looking at the dealer pulling and re-installing my engine after my machine shop completes my heads and cam and reassembles. What would you think about this scenerio?
I just swapped one out last week on a hydrolocked 1999.Book time is 23 hours, and that is what the ins. co. paid...Expect to pay 1 hour additional for disassembly after removal...What did they quote you???
JeeeZUS! 23 hours to swap an engine?? 14-16 is a high side estimate. Esp at the avg $85/hr Corvette Labor rate. I was about to call some dealers myself for engine swap quotes.
They quoted me 20 hours for remove and replace. And 3-4 extra to tear down the engine. Is that in the ballpark? I sure would love to do motors all day for a living at these hours paid. Thanks for your help!
Man - I watched a car come in to a shop at 8am on Friday, come out and have a new motor installed and running Saturday night. I guess they probably did have about 16 hours in it though.

After you are done with the motor swap, you will have to repair a water leak or an electrical problem...You may spend 4-5 hours repairing it,and GM will pay you only 1 hour...Its called flat rate, and it all averages out in the end, usually not in the techs favor...I can assure you... :yesnod:
Mello,
In case you don't understand, and maybe C5 can touch on this, book time is a guide to how much to charge for certain jobs. It is not a number pulled out of the air by GM or anyone else. There are Chiltons and Motors manuals for labor time and these are what most dealers and repair shops go by for estimates. If they take less time to do it they make money. If it takes more time they lose a bit. $1900-$2000 for a quality motor swap is not out of line, though I know a good tuner who does it for $1500 or so plus parts. Well worth it to be done right. Now I think you paid $3000 for as heads/cam swap and got thoroughly raked for sure, but no need to take it out on GM or other techs if they have something in black and white to back it up.
Hope you get the new motor in soon and get back to a happier Mello. You have been a bit grumpy for sure on $$ subjects
