I have recently discovered a leak in the rear axle area of my "99 Mn6 transmission. The car has about 45K miles on it. Does this make and model have a history of this type of problem? I haven't had it on a lift yet to see if I can tell where it is coming from. What type of fluid or gear oil does this transaxle take? Thanks very much in advance for any help you can send my way!
The C5 has a history of problems with drivers side rear differential leakage.
There are two separate causes. fialure of the o ring gasket and overflow thru the top pressure release valve. There are many posts and diy how tos that you can find if you search the archives.
the fluid is a fully synthetic 75W90 gear oil plus 4 oz of GM (or aftermarket) limited slip additive.
Popular bradns for top up or replacement are Mobil 1,
Ammsoil, Royal Purple. any leakage would be a thick viscous liquid slightly darker than fresh motor oil.
If it is the manual gear box that is a thin red Dexron III ATF fluid.
again Mobil 1, Royal Purple ( Max ATF or Synchromax) and Ammsoil are favored replacement products
