Default Need Help w/Power Steering

I went to get gas and when I re-started the car, no special indicator lights came on, but there was a lot of resistance with the steering wheel and turning required much added muscle.
I checked the fluid level - there does not seem to be any leak, and the fluid level is between 'cold' and 'hot' and the engine temp was about 215. Looks like it needs to have the fluid topped off. The manual says to use special power steering fluid. Can automatic transmission fluid be substituted? The stores are closed for the night here and I was wondering if I have any alternatives until I can have it looked at.
Do you think it just needs to be topped off?
It is a 1999 with 90,000 miles.
Thanks!

My 98 has the same problem intermittently. Check your codes. You have some wheel position/speed sensors that are going out. I haven't replaced mine yet because you have to pull the steering column out to get to them.

I had some problems with a steering sensor and it will cause stiff steerig among other problems... Check you codes and be careful who you let take out your steering column...
