I just purchased a set of new wheels to use for HPDE events, and decided to instal tire pressure monitors. Before installing the new tires, I decided to make sure the new TPMs were functional, so I reprogrammed the new ones in my hands (as someone previously suggested in another post on this subject.) Everything worked fine.
Then, when I went to re-program the sensors installed on the car, I can't get the car to register the Front Left (the first one in the sequence, of course!) Since I'm using an old speaker magnet, I wondered if the thickness of the rim was keeping the magnet too far away from the sensor, so I tried another wheel. It turns out the car will register the other 3 wheels, but does not see the left front. (The car accurately registered the front left tire pressure before I started this process, so I find it hard to believe the battery suddenly died.)
Before I start something like finding a more powerful rare-earth magnet, or replacing the sensor, can anyone suggest what might be causing the problem?
Don't know if this will help, but I just replaced all 4 sensors on my 2001 about a month ago and I could not get any to register - even after buying three magnets. Finally what I realized was causing MY problem was that I was not holding the magnet still long enough. I was using the magnet off a dial-indicator base on my last try and I just could not believe it was not powerful enough. So while I was holding it next to the valve stem in disbelief and frustration, the horn honked! So what I found is that on my new sensors, if I held the magnet still for 5 seconds between the valve stem and rim, I would get a confirmation every time - I was just not waiting long enough before getting frustrated - I figured I would get a response almost immediately - but not in MY case.
I once had a similar problem with a previous girl friend who also required more than 5-seconds of stimulation to get a positive response - who knew?
I don't think it was a technique issue, as I was able to get the other 3 to register. I moved the car so that the valve stem was at it's lowest point so I could lay the magnet on the rim and valve stem and leave it there. The other 3 registered very quickly.
Any other ideas before I get a replacement, and have to get the tire shop to mount and balance?
Craig,
Have you driven the car any distance with the new sensors? It seems that sometimes it takes a few miles for the sensors to register.... Just a thought and simple enough to try before doing anything drastic. Good luck.
It's not a matter of the pressure registering on the DIC - I can't get the horn to honk, registering that the sensor was found by the car.
While not directly addressing your question, why are you reprogramming them a second time? If you programmed them while in hand before installation on the wheel(s), kept track of which sensor went to which location and installed them on the appropriate wheel, you don't need to reprogram them again once they are on your car.
If you didn't keep them in order, and everything was previously working fine, sounds like you need to try and find a bigger magnet, or hold it longer as suggested.
Sorry for the confusion. I have 2 full sets of wheels and pressure sensors, one for the street, and one that I'm mounting with r-compound tires for the track. Prior to installing the monitors on the track wheels, I wanted to confirm that the sensors were good, so I registered them in hand last night, and all worked fine.
Then, when I went to re-register the sensors on the street wheels (which are currently mounted on the car), I couldn't get the front left sensor to communicate with the car - although the other 3 sensors will register.
Oh, so it's the old sensors in the street wheels that are giving you problems, and not the new sensors in the track wheels. How old are the street wheel sensors? Perhaps you do just have a weak battery.
They're original, and the car was built in May 2001, so the battery is ~6 years old. I just find it hard to believe the coincidence. I just drove the car yesterday afternoon, and checked pressures from the dash, so I know it was registering before I started...
I'm going to try to find a really strong magnet and try again tonight, but unless someone has any other ideas, it looks like a new sensor, and mounting and balancing are in my future.
Here's a photo and link to the rare earth ring magnet I use. It works great...sure it may cost $11 for two ring magnets, but my Vette is worth it. Ring fits right over the valve stem, and sets the horn tooting very quickly. Good luck...
Again not sure if this would have any effect, but I wounder if having two programmed sensors for the front left tire in proximity to the receiver may be confusing it? Are the other set of programmed sensors far enough away from the car while setting the current set? I wonder if maybe the car thinks it is already getting a signal from the tire in question. Just a wild thought?
