A great website is http://www.autopia-carcare.com/inf-polishing.html
for how-to's like getting scratches out.
It's best to start w/ a compound less harsh to start and work towards more harsh if it doesn't work. I usually try Swirl mark remover for a starter made by 3M -check autogeek.net for it.
Also, I definitely use 3M fine cut rubbing compound for scratches that don't come out w/ the swirl mark remover. http://www.autogeek.net/3mperllrubco.html It's safe and not too harsh. I've not done any damage w/ it using hand microfiber applicator pads or w/ a porter cable random orbital buffer.
That should help u out. Also, look at the car care section of the forum for more info as well.
Make sure to top it all off w/ your favorite wax or sealant.
