Default Spring Thingy for holding roof?

I have an 02 Coupe with 27k. As those of you with Coupes know, when you take out the top and put it in the "trunk", there are two spring loaded bolts with rubber grommets on the end that operate like bolt action rifle bolts that secure it when you stow it in the hatch. Mine is missing one of the springs, although the bolt is still there.

I bought it with 18k a year and a half ago, and suffered through last summer with my hatch secured at 3 points out of 4. Also, the bolt that doesn't have spring tension vibrates and makes an annoying noise. I don't want to hear it again this summer....

I went to my small town dealership today to try and buy one, and although I can't discredit them for effort, they tried mightily to find a diagram with the part number for the spring, I left with them probably thinking I was insane and no such thing existed (I was in my daily driver so I couldn't show them).

So... has this happened to anyone else? Is this part sold as an assembly with both bolt and spring, or just the spring? Is it outrageously priced for what it is? Is it difficult to replace (I wouldn't think so since the bolt is still there and the spring somehow got loose - and sometimes the bolt falls out)? Can I just buy a spring of a specific length and diameter at the hardware store and replace it? If so, anyone know what I need?

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Forum vendor - Corvette Central used to have them. Around $50-60

$50-$60 FOR A SPRING? Does it have gold embossed C5 emblems all over it? Just kidding, but I wonder if that's for some sort of complete assembly (bolt, spring, cylinder they fit into, etc.)? Anyway, thanks for the reply.

My car came with one of those pins missing. To replace it from GM you must buy the enitre trunk latch assembly. The 50-60 mentiond from corvette central is just for the targa top latcha (piece of plastic with two screw holes that the pin and spring mount in). I think i might have the spring from my broken one still floating around in one of my trunk compartments. I will try to look when i go home tonight.

As a side note, my bolts have a piece of rubber around them to reduce vibration, like a short piece of hose around the bolt.

Mine make no noise at all.

They say it's good to have your roof secure, you don't want it comming lose and flying around the passenger compartment.

Thanks for the input guys.

Itallian33 - If you have the spring and would be willing to part with it for a reasonable price, I would be VERY greatful. Just let me know...

In fact, for $60 dollars, I could probably fill up and drive to Stillwater and back to Kansas City.

If you don't have it, no biggie. I will probably just purchase an assortment of small springs from the hardware store for $10-$15 and see if I can get one of those to do the trick.

Thanks again.
