Default Thoughts on 383 stroker?

I'm thinking of changing my 402 plans to a 383 based LS6, something like this here:
http://texas-speed.com/shop/item.asp?itemid=43&catid=3

I've heard some people mention something about a loss of efficiency with a longer stroke, what exactly would I be sacrificing over a well built 347, and what would I gain? I got the approx 10% more power part, is that about it?

The 383 uses the same stroke length as the 402: 4.00" stroke. With a long stroke crank, there is more angular momentum. As RPMs increase, angular momentum increases, which puts more stress on the parts as RPM increase. So longer stroke cranks usually do not spin as high. On the other side, long stroke cranks do make a lot more torque.

Yeah but it should still spin up to 6800 or so right? I see you had one and was going to ask WTF was up with your numbers until I saw your elevation I remember driving through Denver, not so much fun!

As long as the motor has forged internals and good ARP hardware, 6800 should not be a problem with a 4.00" stroke.

The thin air here does rob a lot of power

If my 346 ever gives up the ghost, I'll probably go with a 383 myself. I love my H/C combo, and it would give me about the same HP, but add torque, and widen the TQ band even further. And I could keep my present valvetrain. I'm satisfied with my present power level, but others always want more.

Haha, my 346 kinda had its ghost forcefully taken from it due to a stupid error by me It's in the 70's here today, spring has arrived and I do not have a working car. I'm about to go nuts!!

Not that much difference in cost, I would go with the 402. We are at 7,000 feet here and it does make a difference.

In the shortblocks no there's only a $600 or $700 difference, but then I end up needing all kinds of other stuff, I would want L92 heads, an L76 intake, a new throttle body, a larger MAF I'd want 1 7/8 headers as opposed to my 1 3/4 blah blah blah and next thing you know it goes from a $600 difference to a $2500 difference. It's not a track car, and honestly it will probably NEVER see a dragstrip, I just want it to be fun to drive and I'd like to have an edge on most things I would encounter on the street

If you don't get the 402 you will most likely wish you would have at some point.... At least I would

just use the 1.75 headers and see what the rest will add to it.

If you are going to go with a stroked motor I would go for the 402.

I would not use the L76 intake and L92 heads though. From everything I have read you need a big bore to take advantage of the heads. There are a lot of 346 that are producing more HP than the 402 L92s. However, the 402s with the L92 heads are putting out more torque. I would guess an Ls6 manifold with some worked LS6 heads would produce better results.

I think the 383 is a great idea, I don't see that much more if any power coming from the 402s, and not having to worry about block conversions is nice. TS or SDPC both do great LS6 383 short blocks. I was on the verge here recently, until a *certain* persons engine became available.

I was thinking
383 forged LS6 shortblock
low to mid 240 duration cam with 600 ish lift (SDPC big stick)
(I'd get this and the timing set dialed-in from the shortblock retailer)
(I might check to see how much an upgrade to Callies dragonslayer crank would be from the eagle.)

Get a set of the AFR225 small bore heads with the valve train all set for a solid roller, 90mm intake/tb. Match that up with a 1 7/8 header and a full 3" exhaust, mmm mmm.

I don't think you would do much better for power with the 402

OR buy my 346, and wait to see what shakes out with the L92 stuff!

Its all good, and its all fun, now get...
