The weather was great today in Ohio so I took my 97 automatic out for a spin and when it reached 200 degrees trans temp it started shifting hard coming out of low into second. The car has 130,000mi. on it is it time to see RPM transmission? What is the culprit here since I am not a big trans guy. Or is it the trans?

It is definitly the trans, but 200 Degrees is normal trans temp. Temperatures between 180 and 200 are normal operating temps.
But your trans has some miles on it. Your clutches and bands have some wear on them. I would replace the trans fluid and filter and take a look at how many and what size metal shavings you have in the pan on the magnet.
Metal shavings are normal for wear, but certain sizes and amount wil tell you otherwise. If you see copper particles, that is your clutches. Then You should see a Trans shop, well its there get a torque. convertor.
I would like to get through the summer with this. Would adding some Lucas trans additive or something similar help? I have been waiting all winter to drive this beast!!!!

Getting a thicker substitute will help but wont remedy the problem. I forgot the name of the brand, but it is as thick as malassis(sp). That helped my buddy for for a short time. If the bands and clutch packs are shot there is nothing you can do but re build.

The A4 is weak, plain and simple. That being said, have you had the fluid level checked. If the car, is taking a little extra time to shift and then hitting hard, it could be a low fluid level.
