Default Yet another soundproofing idea

While at Lowe's picking up the closed cell neoprene foil backed duct work insulation, I happened to notice as I walked through the store that Armstrong or some company makes drop ceiling tiles, 2 ft X 4 ft out of fiberglass, 1/2" thick, with a patterned vinyl cover on one side for aesthetics. This vinyl cover would keep fiberglass particles from gettnig loose and the fiberglass mat is relatively dense so shouldn't be as likely to "shed" small bits of fiberglass. The best part is these things are dirt cheap, like $2.00 or $3.00 each.

I can't believe I'm the only one who has noticed these but I can't find anything on the forum about them. If you read this and have tried these drop ceiling tiles as sound proofing for the cargo storage areas in your car, please post your results.

Do you think a Spray Mount adhesive on the back side and duct tape over the joints would be any help in keeping the little beasties from getting loose?

The panels you speak of are compressed fiberglass sheets that are certainly more convenient to work with. But they are not very dense and won't do much more than you could achieve with regular fiberglass insulation smashed into tight spaces. Owens Corning makes a few other more dense versions that we use in recording studios. OC 701 and 702 are much more dense and will absorb a much wider frequency bandwidth.

Where can I find this insulation bat? Is it a Lowe's/Home Depot item?

I see you're from Brentwood, I'm in Franklin. PM me and I'll give you a couple of sheets. Or call 425-2700. I think they have 703 in stock. It comes in 1, 1.5, 2 and 3 inch thicknesses in 2' x 4' panels
