I noticed my rear end making some sort of a "winding" noise now everytime I drive it. Its not loud, but I can def. notice it. I have heard that C5's could have noisy rear diff? I have an A4 with the 3.15 gears. Thanx
First thing to check is fluid level. If low you need correct weight fluid plus positraction additive (for most oils, some have it included). You will also need an oil pump to fill (cheap at most auto stores).

Ok thank you for the response! I will check that tomorrow morning .
I ahd samre problem, hopefully it is your rear end lube,, but that was not the case with my c5. It was the left rear wheel bearing making a plastic zip tie noise about 40 mph. Timkin

ok it's hard to describe noise on a forum. But I think I recognise what is described here, I have the same thing. And I heard it on my 2000 A4, and my current 2004 A4.
Very subtle Groan, or Growl as you accelerate through 800-900 RPM. That's all. Definitely coming from the back of the car. Rearend, tranny?...have no idea.
And its not the exhaust. Had several different systems including stock...same growl.
"Just a guess, but... could it be the fuel pump you hear. It is very noisy and right behind the driver's seat. Just a thought."
Mine also makes a noise. The noise stops when I let off of the accelerator so the fuel pump idea makes sense in my case. If the fuel pump is making the noise is there anything to be concerned about or do they all do that?
thanx for everyone's input...but i think wirelessman hit the nail on the head, I had the rear end checked out, everything looked ok, fluid was fine...turns out it was my right rear bearing that needed replacing

Just curious, what was your mileage? I noticed a rear wheel/tranny/ sound too on my A4 2000. Not bad, I would say it sounds like a power antenna motor if anyone knows what that sounds like. I only hear it at very low speeds right above idle?

Have a good shop check it out..well worth the money..siezed wheel bearings at speed are no fun....unless you like soiled undies....

I have 91k miles on my vette....It was a winding noise that got louder the faster I went....I thought it was the rear diff making noise, turns out it was a bad bearing.
