To be sure, it needs to be done by the dealer as the car will not start once the new one is in place. There is a security feature built in that the PCM and BCM share a password between them that a new BCM will not have. There is a procedure in the manuals that states how to manually get it to relearn the password/security for this problem. What I don't know is how many other things have to be programmed as well for your car. I suggest the dealer.
the dealer does sound like the best way but I have heard that there is a trick to program it bu turning the key on for 11 minutes and then off for 30 seconds 3 times??
Its something like that but I'm at work and my manuals are lost in the garage somewhere anyway. Like I said though, it may need other programming to be done for your specific car. If you change out the BCM anyway and attempt the password reset, if it doesn't work, you may not be able to put the original BCM back in as it may no longer work. I can't help but wonder why you are changing the BCM?
I'm wondering the same thing. My car won't start now and I think my BCM could have been wet. If I buy it used does it have to be year, and vehicle specific?
I'm not positive about using another BCM from some other year. I tend to doubt that it will work. The BCM is a computer by itself therefore it has its own firmware within in order to allow it to run those portions of the car that its supposed to. At a minimum, I would research the part numbers for your BCM as opposed to whatever you are trying to put in. If they aren't the same, there is usually a good reason for it. Again, I suggest the dealer and a tech 2 scan tool for this problem. The BCM itself is relatively cheap and the labor to put it in vs not being able to drive your car. Personally, I think its worth it to have it done correctly plus they have the liability to make sure its done correctly whereas if you spend all the money and it doesn't run, you are simply out of luck.
