Re: Competitive Mode - What Exactly Is It? (Jim 47)
As soon as I got home last night I tried pressing the AH button on my May '98 A4 C5 - FANTASTIC! it went into 'Competitive Mode' which was displayed on the DIC.
I checked my '98 drivers manual and all I could find was a topic on 2-23 about competitive track driving and to contact your dealer regarding this. Anyway I'm glad I have this as a UK fellow C5 coleague appears not to have this feature?
Thanks again for everybodies comments.

I don't remember Active Handling ever retarding the throttle. As far as I know, it only works with the ABS system to brake the wheels.

Mike, try powerbraking a pre-2001 car, with Generation I Active Handling, in Competitive Driving mode. The further you depress the accelerator, the more engine power decreases. Generation II Active Handling (2001 -2002)will allow you to powerbrake in Competitive Driving... Generation I will not. Just a "factoid".:)

Re: Competitive Mode - What Exactly Is It? (drives61)
Nope. You cannot be moving when the five seconds are up. If you install a toggle switch, the BCM will generate an error code after the circuit is held low for over sixty seconds.
The TracActive does all this for you!
As for the power braking, why would you do it anyway? Just curious.

Well, it is fun to REALLY light 'em up once in a while. Plus, though I don't race, I would suspect that for warming the tires before a run at the strip, a powerbraked launch would really do the trick.:D
By the way, I think you've got a great product there that covers use of the car about 991/2% of the time. This is just a quirk in the Generation I cars vs Generation II. As I said, just a "factoid".:)

I just read your post regarding powerbraking. I'm confused again now!! What is the difference between AH button left on, AH button turned off (disengaged) and competitive mode (AH button pressed for 5 secs). It seems from what you're saying that Competitive Mode on a '98 C5 (generation I AH) leaves active handling (braking)-on plus traction control (power to rear wheels)-on. If that is correct? then whats the difference between the AH button left on and competitive mode. If I'm being really stupid be gentle with me and please explain again.
Re: Competitive Mode - What Exactly Is It? (lesterbird)
You're not being stupid at all. This is an anomaly I discovered while messing around with my car. Competitive Driving does turn off Traction Control but leaves Active Handling engaged. However, if you attempt to powerbrake on a Generation I car, in Competitive Driving, the further you depress the accelerator the further DOWN engine power goes. One would think that Traction Control was still engaged, wouldn't you? However, it is not. When you burn out from a standing start in Competitive Driving, without powerbraking, the tires just smoke and if the car starts going sideways, Active Handling will engage, but not Traction Control. I speak from experience.:D This anomaly occurs on Generation I Active Handling cars (late 1998-2000) only. Generation II Active Handling cars can power brake in Competitive Driving. If you wish to power brake a Generation I car, both Traction Control AND Active Handling must be turned off.

Can a 99-00 with AH be modified somehow so that the car does not have to be stopped in order to change into competition mode?
I aske this same question and was told it cannot be...not sure if that's true though. One would think a computer adjustment should allow it.

Thanks for your comments. Up until now I have been driving my '98 C5 A4(when conditions are ok) with the AH disengaged - I found the car to be alot more responsive and fun but clearly more dangerous. With this newly discovered (for me) Competitive Driving Mode I should get the best of both worlds.
Re: Competitive Mode - What Exactly Is It? (Nekbyter)
It seems it's a big deal to change this code for some unknown reason.
Remember, the LapTrax TracActive Controller puts the car into Competition Mode automatically! Even if you have a '99 or '00, by the time you're settled and ready to drive off, the car is already set.
It's almost the same as changing the PCM to have Competition Mode as the default.
Re: Competitive Mode - What Exactly Is It? (Ha-Ha)
According to the Bragg-Smith instructors last week when I was there for the level II course the Competitive mode will not only turn off the traction control but backs off the programmed settings when the Gen II system (01 & 02) activates to try to control your direction. I tried lapping in the normal modes, competitive mode, and skip pad with the system turned off. This was in a 01 car BTW. In the 'normal' mode the system controls your wheel spin by applying a brake to the spinning rear wheel, and the system activates to control under/over steer when one is about to loose directional control. In the competitive mode, the directional control system doesn't activate as soon but when it does activate it works in the same way. In competitive mode there is no wheel spin control on the rear wheels. As I mentioned I ran the Bragg-Smith cars in all the modes and all in-control to out-of-control environments and all work as advertised. It's a cool system!
Re: Competitive Mode - What Exactly Is It? (Halls 2)
Hmmmm, do you think that is what could have hurt my dyno, on the first two pulls, I had the traction control/active handling off and pulled 314 and then 313 respectfully. I turned the car off to let it cool some, then after about 10 minutes, started it up, put it in competitive mode and only hit 303/302 on the 3rd and 4th pull. Do you think this is what caused the problem. Nothing else changed.
