Default Fixing removable top on my coupe

Hi, this is my first post. I just got a 2000 coupe and the top frame is cracked in 2 places just inside the latches. I assume this is common? Can I weld these or will this hurt/break the glass top? Or should I just buy New/Used top? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Do you have any pics of the issue?

If you weld them it might be only a temp fix. I haven't heard of many doing this.

When you say weld are you speaking of JB WELD or Welding Metal?

Let us know!

Thanks,Matt

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner!

From the other Vette owners I know with the glass top, they haven't had this happen yet!

Is your Vette putting out high HP and TQ?

Maybe it was 1/4 mile raced and it torqued it out of shape! It is said that the glass roof is the weaker of the two tops!

If it is tigged and it doesn't interfier with it locking you should be okay!

You can also check in the For Sale section here too many members sell their extra roofs! usually at a good price too!

Hey! Keep us posted as to the fix and with some pics too!

Thanks,Matt

Thanks for the help. It is bone stock except for K&N filter. Maybe the previous owner stepped on it. I was hoping this was a common problem. The cracks are past the latches where the structure steps back out. I have no idea of how to post pics( I took some today) also on the page where I am posting it says I cannot add pics? I am taking it to a weld shop tomorrow, hopefully it is not a big deal. I will post tomorrow with details.
If you can help me with pics I will post them. Thanks again!

You can go here and pot off of www.photobucket.com you set up an account and DOWNLOAD you photo's there then copy and paste them onto the forum!

Like this: Once your pictures are secure and your account is done then do this:
Open your post on the forum and get it so you can write in this box,

then in another window or tab on your computer have your photobucket page open

then underneath each picture there is 3 boxes you want to LEFT click the mouse on the bottom one (One that says IMG)

It will turn blue then you RIGHT click the blue (with the pointer on the mouse) and a box will drop down go to copy and LEFT click on it

Now open the forum page and put your mouse pointer and click on the page so the curser is flasing (Like it is now when I write) now put the arrow of the mouse right there and RIGHT click so a box comes down and click on paste

Now the image will be pasted so when your done and click on Submitt Reply they will come up!

If you get stuck let me know and I can call if you want or e-mail me at my e-mail in my sig or cell phone!

Thanks,Matt

And the left side! It is worse and out of align. I went to the weld shop and I think the guy was scared to do it because of the glass. Is there a way to remove the glass from the frame?? The previous owner had welded it before, with a mig I think. There are craters and burn lines in the bottom where the slag hit the glass and rolled. Any thoughts on this are appreciated. I hate to buy another top but will probably have to! Also I guess I could put more than one pic in a post, I will try that next time.

Default Never saw that before !

before messing with it take it to a stealership and ask to see the local service rep. Maybe if it's a rell fluke they havent seen before they will replace it... maybe not but what the hell... nothing ventured nothing gained !!! good luck keep us in the loop

You're welcome! That looks pretty bad. You could still try to tig it and or as stated above take it to the dealership and see if there ever was a recall on them!

Let us know what happens If not there always is the forum for sale section!

Thanks,Matt

Have not had that problem happen to my top yet. Hope it never does. Not sure if it can be welded or not. Might just want to check out purchasing a used top.

The guy I got it from said he tried to mig weld it( said he thought it was steel) Anyway I will have it tig welded this next week. Since it had a previous attempt at a repair , I believe a dealer would just laugh.
