I am new to the forum and will be picking up my 04 C5 tomorrow and I want to do intake and exhaust very soon. I am look for some veteran advice on what intake and exhaust setup to go with.
RevXtreme has a group purchase going on for the Calloway Honker. The Calloway & the Vararam have shown the best on-track gains with our builds. As far as cat-backs that is your personal preferance of how loud you want it! Where are you located?
Your going to get 100 different responses. The exhaust is a "taste" item to me. You like it, then but it. Some sites have clips to listen to. Do a forum search you come up with 1000s of posts.
The very best advice is to use the search function.
These subjects have been discussed at least one million times and you will find a wealth of information.
As far as the exhaust goes find some cars in your area that have the different brands of exhaust your are interested in installed and listen to them from both the outside and inside the car. The clips help some but hearing them in person is best way to choose.
Welcome, and beware. Once you start mods, it never ends. I installed a Vararam a few weeks ago. The performance gain was noticeable from the beginning. The bad part was it was a real pain to install. Cajundude has great instructions on the install. Throw away the ones Vararam gives you. If you do get it make sure you oil the filter before you put it in. They don't tell you to do this in the instructions either. You can get one for about $305-$315 with shipping from Forum members who are vendors.
The Honker in my opinion is a better made unit. The quality level of the Vararam did not impress me. However, the Honker is about $490 for a C5. I think that the performance gains are probably about the same though. There are alot of other intakes, but the only ones which really help are cold air ones which draw air from outside the engine compartment. The others will help, but not as much. Now that the weather is nice, go to a car show and find someone with each one to check them out in person.
As far as exhaust, the better ones probably give the same performance gains too. Most members here talk about the sound they prefer, and the resonance which some systems have which is annoying.
There are lots of posts about everything, so just start reading. Good luck.
