By accident I shifted to 5th a little to far and it went almost in reverse until I heard the gears grinding. This is the first time I have Ever done that with any manual tranny. Could anyone explain why the lock out was not working? The computer ? What ?

It's possible the reverse inhibit solenoid is either unhooked or bad. It should lock out reverse above 3 mph. On my '99 its located on the top side of the transmission.
Even with the electronic lockout NOT working, it takes like 15 pounds of force to overcome the "mechanical" lockout. That just about takes two hands! What are you guys doing?
The electronic lockout solenoid only lets you engage reverse when it is on. If it is not working, you have to overcome the "mechanical" backup.
Unless, somehow, your electronic lockout is on all the time. Never heard of this, and I would think that it would overheat. You could test for this by finding the fuse and pulling it.

FYI - When shifting quickly between gears, I've heard and had it happen to me where you grind. I believe it's more related to the syncro's than going into reverse, but I may be wrong. Nonetheless my reverse lockout continues to work.
Ok, a reverse lock out would require you to lift a t handle or ring on the shifter.
Is there one there?
A reverse inhibit can be overcome with about 15lbs of force this is about 1/10th the force that can be exerted on a shifter during rapid shifting.

Spirited driving has been known to be performed in a state much like fight or flight. Which will raise your body's adrenaline level and strength.
Trust me I've done the whole bump and grind on reverse more then I'd care to admit in numerous vehicles.
