Would someone who has programmed a replacement set of tire pressure sensors please give me some idea to the size and strength the programmer, aka magnet, has to be. It seems the magnet I have, which I thought would be strong enough, isn't getting the job done. The service manual shows a horse shoe shaped magnet with a hole for the valve stem to go through. Is this configuration required for programing the computer?
Thanks for your reply!
While that magnet would work nicely, there are other ways. I use my Craftsman telescopic magnetic retriever. The magnet cylindrical, bout 3" long, less than half an inch wide. Only trick is to move if from one side of the valve stem to the other if you dont get a horn beep. Also good to let it grab onto the rim SOFTLY so you dont scratch.
I purchased this magnet after seeing this link posted previously (and it works fine), but in my case what I found was that I had to hold "any" magnet still against the valve stem for at least 5-10 seconds before the horn would honk. I just reprogrammed my new sensors a second time after a flat tire using this new magnet and my car still waited nearly 10 seconds per tire before I got confirmation.
you don't need that big a magnet but you must follow the instructions EXACTLY. When I did mine with a big magnet, because I like to cheat, I put the magnet on the sensor I was going to program before I started the programming proceedure - thought I'd save myself some back and forth trips - WRONG.When I tried it exactly as directed every thing worked fine. Good luck.
An old speaker magnet works well also, but most of the time after initiating the process on the DIC, I simply touch the valve stem with this magnet. I have occasionally noticed that it can take a few seconds longer than the procedure calls for to get the first beep...
Well friends, I would have to say this is the most frustrating experience I've had with my Corvette. I can get the left front tire pressure sensor programmed (horn sounds), but the right front doesn't respond. Not that the left front was easy but it did finally come around. The frustrating part is that after the left front is programmed, if the right front doesn't get programmed the system makes you start over from the beginning at the left front. If the computer has learned the left front information why does it have to start over at the beginning if the right front fails to be programmed?
One other item is that the directions to start programming instruct you to press the "Reset" button in order to clear any IPC display warning messages. After pressing the "Reset" button I end with the display message REAR L 0 R 0 PSI. I can't get to a blank IPC display. Is this alright before going to the "Options" button?
I hate to admit it but I'm about ready to call a stealership. Can anyone recommend a honest Corvette dealer in Minnesota?
