Default Static problem from radio in new 2001

I have a two week old 2001 coupe (could not pass up that 0% deal!) with the cd/radio head that is giving me a loud static noise most prevalent on the lower frequencies. The dealer put a new radio in today and it did not fix the problem. The noise is from all speakers, and also when the car is not running (so not the alternator). The antenna connection on the front and rear windows also seems secure. Any ideas? Has any one had the same problem?
Thank you,

Erik

I had a reception problem.
The dealer could not find the problem, so he tried telling me it was caused by my window tinting.
....Love those new car dealers !!....
Turned out to be the attenna connection.

Are your windows tinted? Some of the best tints have a fair amount of metal in them (better reflection, UV filtration, blah blah). After I had mine tinted, AM went to hell (I listen to sports talk) and FM was even hampered. The antenna in the '01 is in both the front and rear windows.

also radar detector in the area of the antenna will cause a problem because of the signal put out by the detector. i found this out on my venture van because i had poor reception and ask for a new radio but it acted the same till i turned off the radar detector and the reception improved greatly. this was am and fm both as the little FM sign on the face of the radio would go off untill i turned off the detector.

I have the same problem, but doesn't bother me too much as I listen to a cd 90% of the time. I HATE talk radio on AM and can't stand the morning FM stations as their "on air" personalities talk more than they play music!

My 99 Coupe with tinted windows, get a lot of static on the AM band This is only when the car is sitting still, with the engine running. Once you are moving, the static goes away and the reception is clear. FM is clear at all times. :chevy

Stereo designers know that most people listen to FM and thus the AM portion of the tuner is a very cheap design. The other huge problem is that a car like the C5 has many microprocessors running in it. These mini computers, the ignition and the alternator generate a ton of hash that is impossible to filter out. They "jam" the entire AM band.

In Florida, the high voltage power lines constantly arc due to the salt air. These arc's jam the AM band also.

I read a post, some months ago, where c4c5specialist talked about
relieving this issue by tightening an antenna connector located behind
the trim on the driver side b-pillar. Said he had seen many that were
only partially connected by the factory.

Sorry if I have mis-quoted, working from memory.
Need to do it myself one of these days.

I can't add much to this, but I have the Hardtop, thus an external antenna, and my AM and FM are clear as a bell. Meaning, there may be something to this window tinting or the physical connection to the antenna. Otherwise, if it was engine related, I would be experiencing static also(??).

The coupe has a "diversity" antenna system. It feeds the front and rear window antenna signals into an electronic control unit. It is much more complicated than the FRC or Vert which both have a mast antenna. The procedure to trouble shoot poor reception is 40 steps long in the shop manual.

I scanned it for another club member. I'll post it when I get home.

I must be lucky as mine works great; however, I recall some members having
a static problem that was fixed when the selling dealer had the radio swapped.

The GM Delco radio is crap but the CD is pretty good. I wonder if the static is
unique to the radio only. How about the CD?

Thank you for the input- the problem is on the FM band- have not even used AM. I was unable to open the document containing the steps to resolve the issue- any possibility you could cut and paste on this topic?

Thank you,

Erik

I'll have to re-scan it as a graphic instead of an acrobat pdf file. Maybe tomorrow.

You are correct, there is an antenna module located on the left b-pillar.If the leads are not fully inserted, static will occur :seeya
