Default Lexan Targa Top Peeling - Help

My Lexan top has developed a 2-inch wide bare spot on the passenger side the entire length of the roof. It almost look looks as if the first layer of material has peeled off. I did a forum search, but couldn't find anything specific to this type of problem. Anybody have any suggestions on how to fix this?

Same problem here. Not much you can do, but replace the top.

i wetsanded mine till it was perfectly smooth then had it cleared. from the outside it looks perfect but from the inside you can still see some of the spiderwebbing. im very happy with it versus the cost of replacement

Mine is doing the same thing. I am in the process or removing the outer coating using a Lexan lens polishing kit. It is slow going as the coating is really hard. Called GE and they say it is a Micar (sp?) coating that is baked on. Too bad that the general can't go to the sub who makes them and get them to fix them or replace them.
Once I get the thing stripped. I am going to spray with clearcoat base and a hard Dupont clear coat. I'll try to keep you all posted.

Keep this thread posted on the repair progress. My 1997 top is just about junk so I'd like to try the sand and clear option before giving up totally.

Is there anything that can be done to prevent this? Or at least delay it? Mine is still good (on a 2000), but it does have some minor stone chips here and there. I wondered if it is a good thing or a bad thing to wax it or protect it with some other coating. I don't want to use anything that may react with it and cause it to delaminate sooner.

What do others protect theirs with?

Rick

i gave up on mine and had it painted. of course the top is 10 years old and has enough crack in it for an entire army of druggies. Should get it bak any day. from what i've seen on the forum, painting your old and busted top usually costs about 1/2 to 1/3 the cost of a new acrylic top.

Rubbing a little dielectric silicone grease on it can help a lot. It is a silicone coating.

I finally gave up on my 1998 and bought a newer used one.

I will be interested in any fixes.

Wet sanded mine with 1500 grit & painted with PPG clear. Looks perfect from the outside, but you can just barely see the crazing from the inside. Did mine 8 months ago & it still looks great.

Welcome to the club. All of them do it eventually. The only formula to keep it from happening, is keep it out of the sun.

Yes, but does anyone know why it peels along the passenger side on all of the tops? Hot air from the S.O. relentless talking or what...?

Was talking to my mechanic about it today. He said the worst he'd seen was somebody tried using paint remover on the roof to try and remove the glaze. He wound up painting it. Kind of defeats the purpose of having a clear roof.
