Default Brake fluid question?

I see some of you have been using Ford's brake fluid because of higher boiling points if im not mistaken? I believe I read that it was a DOT 3 fluid? What's the difference between that and DOT 4 or 5 and synthetic? Wouldn't synthetic have the highest boiling point?

Thanks,
Chan

whip383,

Many DOT-5 brake fluids are not compatible with ABS systems.

I recently researched the topic looking for the right fluid to use in my clutch hydraulics. I settled on ATE Super Blue Racing fluid, but there are a lot of choices among high temp tolerant brake fluids.

Here are two links to relevant info:

ATE Super Blue Racing comes in a one liter metal can. Here are details on ATE.

ATE fluid comes in blue and gold (amber) making it easy to tell when the bleeding of the brakes or clutch is complete.I found mine at a local ricer speed shop at about $15.00 per liter because I needed it right away, but it's also available through the mail here at $11.25 per liter:

I haven't ordered from these folks, but their price is appealing.

another option would be to use Motul 600, which has a higher boiling point than the ATE Blue which is 550. I actually use both because I change brake fluid 1 or 2 times a year.

The ATE Blue is well blue and you can see when the new fluid is completely through the system. I change to Motul the next time, it's an amber color.

ATE does make an amber fluid also. Both are synthetic DOT 4.

Chan,

I usually have to get the ATE Blue from catalogers, but the Motul is usually available through most motorcycle shops that have any kind of service / parts department.

The price just went up a buck since the last time I bought some, it's $11.99/liter.

The Ford High Performance brake fluid has the advantages of easy availability (any Ford dealer), and it is a DOT 3 that looks like the GM stuff (helps keep your warranty). The dry boiling point is 550', which is right up there with most racing fluids. Disadvantage is the lower wet boiling point of 284'. I solve that problem by flushing the fluid a couple of days before each track session, so it is basically dry. The other fluids mentioned above have many fans, the Ford stuff has worked for many others.
