I raced my '98 Auto a few times and it was fairly idiot-proof--place in 3rd, powerbrake at the light , get traction and punch it.
Now with a clutch on my '02, I need some help.
The car is stock (except for exhaust) and on runflats. Previous trips to the track usually had me matched up with some big-engined Nova type-- when we took off I could not hear my engine till 3/4 down the track. Do you guys watch your tach when approaching a shift or rely on the sound of the engine ?
Some questions :
RPMs at launch
ease out the clutch or quickly release it ?
RPMs at each shift point--up to 6K at each shift to maximize power or not ?
Sorry for my inexperience to those who routinely do this.
I know what ya mean about the Nova type. It happens to me a lot. It takes some getting used to before you can ignore it. I found my best 60 Ft times when I launch around 2500 rpm. best I can describe it, I let the clutch out sort of in between "DUMP" & "Feather". You just need to practice to find the sweet spot. I had no traction problems unless I dumped it. I had my runflats at 22 psi. Way different than when I had my 94 M6. My 98 is actually easier to launch because it doesn't spin the tires like my 94. Good luck & have fun. Oh by the way, I shift at 5800 or so. SCOTT
Looks like your local and going to the same tracks as me. Traction varies all over the place. 75/80 can be the worst and yet I got my best 60ft time there.
Are you going to go to Cecil Co. this weekend? The traction is great and its an All Corvette Event.
Run flats spin too easily. I bought a set of drag radials mounted on factory front y2k rims from a forum member and run them at 18 pounds of air. Launch at about 3000 rpm and watch my heads-up-display for the word "SHIFT". Works great. I'm .18 away from 12s with a K&N filter and exhaust mods. The two of the worst things you can do are hit the rev limiter and light up the tires.
Gotta be mostly in the tires...with the mods My Z has I can't go WOT at any time in first gear without breaking loose big time... :cry
I'm looking for a set of MTs to mount on an extra set of wheels left over from my 97 coupe.
It would be a good idea if u dyno your car. look at your hp&tq peaks and thats when u want to shift. I've gotten better 60ft times with letting the clutch completly out :mad at 2200. I had my runcraps set at 22psi. But with nittos drag extream 555r's they great!!!! a must.
Re: 1/4 mile tips for a 6 speed ? (BLACK/BLACKZ06)
I have some MT ET streets for sale. The only bad part is that MT doesnt make an ET street larger than 16". I have some 11.5x26x16 ET streets. They have only been used 3 times at the track on my old truck I will sell them for 250 for the set, I bought them for $350. 100 bucks off for only 3 times at track.
Looks like your local and going to the same tracks as me.
Steve,
I've been to 75/80 in Urbana once--rundown, very bumpy, and no decelleration room (other than the corn field !) but like you, got my best time there.
I prefer Mason Dixon in Hagerstown and will be trying my 2002 for the first time 03Nov for a test&tune at 11-5.
