It is red new. Trans fluid gets hot and turns dark, just like any other lubricant.

Your new red fluid will be brown eventually, if you don't change it sooner.

I change MN6 fluid about every 50,000 miles (103,000 miles on 1998). This is when it gets hard to shift or grinds going into sixth. I understand that MN6 transmissions are sensitive to dirty fluid. I don't know why GM says you never have to change it?

I have used Mobil 1 and Amsoil ATD, both synthetic, they improve shifting. I was surprised it didn't last longer.

I never heard of Dexron 5 ! It calls for Denron III, and there is Dexron IV.
