Default Are all gears created equal?

I'm looking at going back into a set of 3.42's for my FI setup since my 3.90's will limit my traction and top end severely. My question is are the 3.42's out of a C5 Z06 the same rear that you buy from one of the forum vendors here? Are they built with the same quality and can they both handle high HP or are the vendors gears built to withstand a higher HP amount? I already have the hardened output shaft that I had installed with my 3.90's less than 10K miles ago when I was just running a heads/cam setup. If I find a low mile set of 3.42's from a Z06will I just be able to bolt them right up to my A4 vert? Thanks

I know of only one mfgr for the ring & pinion gears... and that's Motive Gear. So I'd venture to say that all "ring & pinion gears" are created equal.

but the specialized work needed to replace a gear set - that equalness would depend on the skill of the technicial doing the internal gear swap.

The Z06 3.42 carrier has a hardened internal gear (or is it the case ???)... done by the shot-pening process.

You will hook better with the 3.90 than you will with the 3.43. It will be easier for the engine to accelerate the car and therefore less likely to spin.

I would think 3:42's would be better with that kind of hp and tq. I have about 450rwhp with 4:10's and I can't stomp the go pedal until 3rd.
The internal gears are shot-peened in the Z06 rear end.
You may want to try RPM or DTE for a rear end built to handle your power better. They have several 'Stage' packages depending on what you want.

I know professional dragsters use higher ratios to keep the wheel speed down at the launch (and control the spin) - but on the C5 they don't make gears high enough to reach into that territory (5:1 or greater).

There are some differences, for instance we use cryo treated gears when we build the carriers here, but for your application we would simply purchase a complete ZO6 rear carrier. Then you could sell your complete rear to offset some of the price.

I have a 04 ZO6 rear with a hardened output shaft for sale. Unit has approximately 8000 miles and is almost brand new.

Thanks but I am looking for a local swap. I have The Vette Doctors working on finding me a set to swap with. I'm sure that there are a ton of low mileage Z06's that would love to swap. The MN12 Tranny would work great with the 3.90's
