Successfull Ring Jobs - Feedback Please
Are all jobs a success? Any tips for the tech, who is real good? Any mods while my engine is all over the bench?
Appreciate all feedback
Make sure your getting the 13 lbs top ring and the Napier 2nd ring when they replace them. I'm sure you are. What once was like pulling teeth (to replace rings) has now become common (4th one I've heard about in last 10 days).
I had the Z06/2002 clutch put in while it was apart...no labor expense just parts and the dealer is installing so warranty is still valid.. I would have liked to do more mods but I think asking the dealer to install mods on an extensive engine warranty repair was a bit much. However, I would ask the Service Manager about putting some plugs & wires in. I thought about this too late, my engine is going back in the chassis today.
BTW: due to the oil pump problem my block got bored and they are putting in "1 over" pistons with tight clearances. I ask the SM if the new rings were going on the bigger pistons and he said they were.

I recall that you got the new 13 1bs top rings and the 2nd Napier rings...and you are still using oil? Bumorama!
Did you get new pistons also? If you only got new rings on the factory skinny pistons you might still be getting blow by.
I saw my engine 99% put back together today and learned that each piston has it's own coil and therefore each plug wire runs from the coil in the valve cover to the spark plug. The wires are only about 4" long.

Just the Napier, and expansion ring........leave all the others stock, and do not touch the bores......
This was the last I read about it on the GM Tech Service Bulletin.......per Mr. Juriga...........
Unless this has changed..............this is the way they are sposed to do it
What have you got to lose??
I think this would seat your rings in a matter of a few hundred miles, and then switch back to 5/30 Mobil1.........
I know they say it will void the warranty......but, I have seen, and heard SEVERAL guys do just this, with ZERO oil problems..........FWIW.
As much trouble.expense, and time as you have had......I would seriously consider ( after ALL legal avenues are tried), going down cutting a deal on an '02, and then telling GMAC........they can come N git er'.......
Fair is fair, and right is right.......they aren't holding up there end of this bargain very well......after the first ring job, and you still have the SAME problem......they should drive a new vehicle to your front door.........this is :bs

In mid-April 01' there was a change in pistons for the LS1/LS6 to help prevent piston knock. I think it was to address oil blow by also but the information I read only talked about improving the piston-to-bore clearance.
The pistons were coated with a polymer, antifriction matierial and look black.
The information did just refference the top and middle rings. If your build date was before mid-April 01', the new pistons might help.
I too, have also read posts about seating rings with regular dino oil. I would talk with your dealer about this. Maybe they would put it in before buying it back and not void your warranty.
I would try any of the forum venders for the plugs and wires. After market plugs are going to be copper plugs, with better conductivity, that will not last as long as the stock plugs.
If you plan on doing mods then the plugs & wires will end up on your list, but if you don't plan on sqeaking out the last bid of HP from bolt on mods then changing pulgs might not be noticeable, except on a dyno (a lot of LS1 engines...mine included...fall off around 5500 rpm)
My dealer told me they have changed rings on a few, about 12, and the oil consumption is less...
Don't know what to believe but, 600 miles /qt. is BS and if it becomes 1200 miles per qt. it's still BS.
When has this become reasonable and how am I supposed to be tolerant and except this performance for a vehicle that is um legendary...
