Default Stand alone Trans cooler

I will be getting a 3.42 and torque in the next few weeks and also a tran s cooler. I have seen many threads that recommend to install the cooler as a stand alone . What would be the advantage of this if any ?

if the cooler lines go through the radiator, the radiator heats them up to what the engine is running at. So running the cooler bypassing the radiator eliminates the heat from the radiator.

Another advantage is that if the radiator develops a problem in the section separating the trans fluid from the water you won't introduce water into the trans/TC assy (which will induce a fairly immediate failure if it occurs).

The downside is you'll need to make absolutely certain the cooler is large enough to adequately cool the trans fluid. Passing fluid through the radiator does cool it under normal circumstances rather than heating it up (else why would car manufacturers run the fluid through the radiator in the first place), and most aftermarket coolers are designed to supplement that cooling rather than completely replace it. Heat is your tranny's worst enemy so use caution and if you're eliminating the radiator from the circuit go with the largest external cooler you can make fit (also be sure to mount it so that it gets good airflow!!).

Hi, I have that same cooler which is the one most forum members recommend (here is Jeg's description):

Automatic Transmission Cooler 24,000 GVW 14,400 BTU 11'' x 6'' x 1-1/2''
SuperCooler Transmission Cooler

Unfortunately this won't suffice as a stand alone. I just in the past few days had my mech change mine from a in series design which I had it previously to a stand alone. I noticed that it seemed to do ok initially as I left his garage, but after a 20 min travel, as soon as I stopped even for 5 minutes, my temps soared to over 205 plus just sitting in line without a/c on.
Then I begin my 1/4 mile runs on the dragway. My temps again took off from 190 up to 208 after one run, then turned the car off for 15-20 min, then started at 185 and went up to 218, then turned it off again.
Seems as a stand alone it works better when the car is moving, but still doesn't cool adequately as my temp stayed 194-196 all the way home. I had my mech change my setup back to in series.

As an in series cooler w/ the radiator cooler, tranny temps around town stayed 174-183 and would only go to 190's when it was peak summer w/ the a/c on. On the track, it would go up to high 190's to 200 only after 3 or so runs, but quickly cooled down too. No temps running greater than 195 when not moving either.

My take on this is if u want to run a stand alone, get the B&M w/ the fans.
