Default Check engine light

On my way home from a local car show this evening, 15 miles away.
Check engine light comes on. Car still runs fine and no codes were thrown.
Car: 1998 A4

Can't be something to serious, could it?

Will have it checked tomorrow or Friday.

Thanks
Greg

Don't be too concerned if no code was stored.

Once it becomes repeatable, come back and visit us again.

i learned something, i think. you can get a check engine without a code? i thought the check engine was at the end of the code setting loop.

thanks

the check engine light is normally associated with emissions.
#1 cause 85+ % ... a loose gas cap .
#2 cause ethanol rich fuel that leans out the engine a bit too much

Fill up your car with another brand of gas and make sure the cap is tight... It may take a few on/off cycles for the light to clear itself if that is the sissue

Check engine light is commonly known as the dealer enrichment light.

No current codes.
No headers.
I did clear all of the history codes, and the check engine light went off.

Strange deal. But, no light anymore.

Same here, Twice in the last couple years. Cleared H codes & it was gone. I don`t know if it means anything but both times I was making a lot of short runs Starting & shutting engine off a lot of times in a short time. Car ran fine.

There are codes that are temporary and keep the light on so you can tell if there is a problem developing.

If it comes on again write it down that will tell us what tripped the light.

Erasing wont give you answers, just turn the light off.
