Default Detail Under Hood

I've got an '02 and the engine really needs a good (detail) cleaning. Any advice on best ways to remove all the dirt without causing any damage?
Thanks!

Good question. I would like to know the answer too. Good thing about mine is, it is setting on the engine stand in the garage right now.

Hose it down with Simple Green and wash it off. Don't use a pressure washer and you'll be fine. If you use straight Simple Green don't let it sit too long. I've done mine many many times this way and have never had a problem. When you are finished, crank up the car and close the hood. The heat will dry most of the water away.

I always cover the airbox and alternator with plastic bags and duct tape, spray with Simple Green, pressure wash off, dry with compressed air, and then remove plastic bags and run engine. Also, I usually spray all the plastic and hoses with tire and mat dressing. Wipe it off with cotton gloves, it makes it easier to reach all the areas.

Are the air box and alternator the only things in need of covering? Do any of the electrical connectors/plugs need covering? I've done this and dont want to mess up my car the first time out.

Cover the entire battery compartment. The PCM is in there. Definately dont want that to get wet.

Afterwards you can use a leaf blower to help get the water out of the nooks and crannies. Then run the motor like cajun said.

Every week I mist Fantastic over the entire engine bay and just let it run off the engine. When it dries the grease and dirt have been removed and the hoses, plastic, etc. look very good. Try it and I think you will find it an easy way to maintain your engine compartment.

Be very careful with a pressure washer, you don't to force water under the intake as it'll sit around the knock sensors (expecially the rear one) and screw em up. I don't use a pressure washer...

I'm going to have to try the Fantastic idea!

Forgot who originally posted this, but it works for me...

Spray Simple Green over the entire engine compartment and close the hood. Then wash the rest of the car and while rinsing, open the hood and hose off all the simple green and then shut the hood again and dry the rest of the car off. Then go in and dry the engine compartment off and you are left with a nice shiney motor!
