I was curious how many of you that have an A4 manually shift it, and, do they have a manual/semi-manual valve body in them from the factory? Will manually shifting an A4 shorten it's lifespan?
Do a search on this subject. There are numerous threads.
That said, I have an A4 and rarely shift. I occasionally keep it in "3" when I am in moderate traffic, just to prevent unnecessary shifting into overdrive.
I always let the transmission do all the work in my C5...If I wanted to shift gears I would have bought a 6 speed...woops...I DO have a 1995 ZF 6 speed also ...anyway...if you like shifting an A4 then go for it...I don't think it will hurt it if you don't do it 100% of the time...If you do shift it all the time you may rag it out pretty good
From: Ok! So you don't believe in conspiracies, but will you acknowledge the possibility of there being coordinated activities in secret places? Texas
Ooh. I do, I do!
I shift mine pretty regularly. I enjoy it, but I wouldn't want to shift all the time or deal with clutch issues so I didn't buy a 6 speed.
I'm no expert, but I don't see how shifting manually at the proper shift points will "rag" out the transmission.
If I had the guts/skill I'd do a custom ratchet shifter install like EG's since no one makes a ratchet shifter for our cars.
I think with a tranny cooler and good tranny fluid like Royal Purple will give your A4 a long life. Going through the gears from 2nd to 4th without red lining it won't hurt the tranny. My $.02
