Default 98 cooling questions!!!

I'm a new 98 owner that tried to do the right thing, I think.

My new C5 was a garage find having been ignored for for over a year. I changed out all fluids, hoses, belts and thermostat.
The car ran cool almost always under 180 often in the low 170's and only on hot days did the fans (both) come on. The old thermostat looked different from the new OEM 186 degree one I put in.
After completing the service the car runs at idle in the garage around 192 at which point both fans come on. At 190 both fans are still on.
I do have reason to believe one of the previous owners may have tinkered with the fan settings and assume the old thermostat was cooler than the OEM unit.
I'm thinking the fans have been set down from the stock settings and I need to re-program the computer. Is it normal on a 98 for both fans to come on at the same time?

Any thoughts?

The fans should come on at different times, I believe they come on at 220 and 230.

192 is about the right temp fully warm running on the highway for the stock thermo stat.

The stock fan settings don't turn the first fan on til 226 so your settings have been reprogrammed.

It's not normal for both to turn on at the same time - another indication that your settings have been changed.

There are plenty of threads with more specifics on the stock settings - just do a search on "fan settings" and you should find what you're looking for.

I believe if the AC is on both fans will run at low speed all the time. Check to see that the defroster or AC is not turning the compressor on.

Stock settings for 98 auto and man. are 226 1st and 235 2nd.

Most likely you had a 160 stat in and the fans were turned down in order to gain few hp. They can be alter with any edit software or handheld.

Thanks for this, a local mechanic said that both fans run at the same time but at different speeds, high and low for different temp range. Does this sound right?

Thanks for the information. I've ordered a Hypertech to change the fan settings. One interesting observation I will offer in hopes it may be useful.

When I ran the 160 thermostat I would get a knock on the right side of the engine after it warmed up to 180. I've read about similar noises here, nothing real bad just annoying. It would come and go but you could hear it get louder as the engine warmed up.

Now with the stock thermostat and engine going above 190 the noise has vanished. You can hear it briefly as the temp passes through 180 but it goes away. My racing buddy swears running these engine too cool is not good.

Maybe it went away because I tossed some more dead presidents to the Corvette god!
