I just finished putting in my Vararam (what a *****) and am thinking about leaving off the side portions of the air dam. They appear to serve no real purpose other than pissing me the hell off leaving my driveway.
So, out of curiosity how hot does it get in Assachusetts (sic) in the summer?
In AZ, we frequently see summer temperatures at/near 120 degrees ambient temperature...roadway temperatures literally hot enough to melt asphalt.

We see up to about 100 typically. I don't think it's really going to make a difference, as I monitoring my coolant temps before and after removing the air dams. The average temps did not change one bit. It is my belief that the air dams are strictly for aerodynamic purposes - this is backed up by being specifically mentioned in the owner's manual as well.
