Xlnt write up plus you have the exact same goal as I !

How well do you like the 3.42's over the 3.15's?

This is something I've wanted to do but like you want to keep it drivable!

Let me know!

Thanks,Matt

here's my web page about the 3.42 upgrade:
http://mikemercury.home.att.net/342.htm

the more radical one goes with head/cam setups, the higher the stall generally needs to be. I don't think this converter will take the full advantage of what a meaty head/cam modification could give.

Thanks for the write-up. I presently have a A4 with a stock rear end and tc but would like to upgrade just a little like you did. Good information to have.

Wander where your "boy" Dale learned that one.....hmmmmmm.....

Seriously.....GM Astro van convertors work great for your application and a trusted Hydromatic engineer I know turned me onto this along time ago.......Anyone that we have done this for has been very happy with the end result, except one and he chose one of these instead of what he needed ( GM "world challenge" camshaft...way too much camshaft for these TC's ). This works well with any of the 4L60E's or the 700R4's back through the C4's and late C3's. As a matter of fact, I would almost guarantee you that some of the dominate SCCA SS C4 automatic Corvettes of the mid 80's through early 90's were sporting this otherwise "undectable" TC .....

Anyhow Mercury , glad this worked out for you......see you at the races...

Danny; I didnt say Dale discovered it; but he was the first person to ever mention its existence to me... and then suggest I go with it.

It all good..........

Its good to have low cost alternatives for applications such as yours. It will never "grenade" in your application, I believe that torque convertor was tow-rated to 7500 lbs.......Dont tow any boats with that car,do you??

I just wish I knew about this 2 months ago when I upgraded my gears from 2.73 to 3.42's.... I decided that the aftermarket TC's where just to expensive.
Plus my wife probably wouldn't like the way the high stall TC's shifted for daily driving.

If I ever get the chance to drop the rear again, this is definitely the way I'm going!!!

so just to confirm, this TC will fit in the stock location with no modifications needed? (or no more than any other aftermarket one)

sounds like the way to go for me.

Great story on the torque converter. Got me thinking, especially with $3.30 plus gasoline. My car isn't the greatest for gas mileage until the converter locks up. The other issue I noticed is on a 90 degree day (last Saturday) my tranny got up to 212 just on the side roads, before I got to I-85. It didn't get hotter after that, but didn't get cooler either.

Thank you,
Tim Glover

I tired looking up GM #24208645 on Rockauto, GMpartshouse and a couple of other sites. Only GMpartshouse listed anything, and it was a refurb.
Where is the best place to get one???
