its a 99 hardtop. isn't reverse supposed to be locked out when driving on the freeways? There arent any pcm codes showing up... How much would you estimate to fix this kind of problem?
There is a reverse lockout solenoid mounted on the transmission to keep you from accidentally going into reverse when going from 4th to 5th. If that isn't happening my first guesses would be the solenoid is dead, the connector is flaky, the wiring is damaged, or the ground for it is corroded. The fix cost would be dependent on the tech you brought it to. I would find a tuner on this forum in your area. It shouldn't be a big deal to fix, but you are right on the money in your concern for this problem and the need to get it fixed. If you get it into reverse and let the clutch out at highway speed there will a lot of parts on the road.
My solenoid did the same thing on my 03 mn6. The dealer fixed it under warranty. The reverse lockout solenoid it located on top of the tranny. It is a real pain in the butt ot work on. The tech at my dealer had a big socket that fit over it. He was able to slowly back it out and get the new one in with no troubles.
I had the same problem with my M12 on my '03 Z06. Reverse lockout solenoid. It's been perfect ever since. I believe the solenoid is cheap. Check with Gene Cully.

First off, does everything else work in the car? Speedometer, Cruise control, HUD if equipped? I will assume they do by your earlier response. There are a few things that tell the reverse lockout to engage above 3 MPH. I think that since the car isn't picking up any codes that it may be what was earlier discussed. Just don't get headstrong and go in and spend a bunch of money on changing this and that to find out that it was something else all the time. I speak from experience but from the mechanical end not the owners.
