TPIS .221/.221 .557/.567 @ 114 LSA --- Passed easily Calif smog with rollers---In hindsight I would have gone a bit more on the duration
Many boltons --Major Mods are FAST 78--LT headers--Shaner TB--STOCK LS6 heads Yella Terra rockers-- A4 trans 390 RWHP /424 TQ
I have the G5X3 on a 112 and I barely passed. The car was tuned by LG. It failed the pre-test and then we got the cats real hot and it passed right at the limit, I mean exactly at the limit. The smog guy didn't notice the headers, or didn't care, but it passed.
I'll admit to not re-checking their sites before posting this. But, if you search for members "illmac77" and "Toque", they both have the G5X1-E cam with sound clips on their own websites.

Did a search for 'illmac77' and found his website. Clicked on 'mods' and found the dyno sheet and video of idle with his mods...beautiful z06...dynoed 458/423 with supporting mods similar to Switchbarrel's. G5X1-E www.geocities.com/cizekma/mods.html

You make a good point about pre-heating the cats. Too many shops just start the engine and then run their tests. ALWAYS make sure the shop pre-heats the cats by running the engine at various elevated revs for a few minutes and THEN start the sniffer. My '97 4Runner just barely passed a few years ago, and they stuck me on the "Test Only" bad boy list here in California. Next smog check at the Test Only station, the operator explained how it's critical to heat the cats or most cars will be borderline. He heated them and the Toy passed with amazing numbers.
BTW, this is a GREAT thread for those of us here in the land of the Smog Overseer who are considering a cam upgrade in the future. It has been bookmarked!
Just went to 'Toque's' site...again a nicely modded z06 with several videos and dyno info on LG G5x1-e. This seems to be the cam i think will smog without issues if it's tuned well and give great hp and tq figures with supporting mods. http://mysite.verizon.net/res0aae8/webpage.html
Blown-Interceptor, congrats on passing with flying colors, that makes me feel a lot better about stepping up my cam to something like yours. Can you tell us your smog numbers for the three categories (HC, CO, and NOx) and how they compared to the maximum allowable? This should all be on your smog report. I ask so I can get a feeling for which pollutant categories become risky as cam rowdiness increases.
I have heard from Nick at Newtech in the Bay Area that the 224/228 cam becomes borderline for smog, and his girlfriend there has told me that she had a 224/224 cam on a 114 and passed smog. The impression Ive gotten is that one should also go no lower than a 114 LSA.
That was like two years ago, I have no idea where the report is. I do remember being very shocked that I passed with ease.

Does anyone know specifically what kind of things in the tune need to be accomplished in order to pass the CA smog? Obviously we dont want too little or too much timing and we'd like a stoichiometric AFR, but what in particular is difficult in tuning these cars to have the right part throttle timing and AFR, especially when you can run in closed loop mode and have the injection constantly adjusting itself to achieve a stoichiometric AFR?
Now that we californians are being tested on a dyno it seems like its just as important (if not more important) to have good tuning in the part throttle range from 1000-2000rpm range. My smog numbers were measured at 15 and 25mph, which corresponded to 1300 and 1600rpm on the dyno.
Since i am not a tuner it would be best to post in the scan and tune section where i am sure you can get answers from the tuners that reside here in Ca. Rick at Synergy, Andy at A&A corvette performance, Nick at Nutec, Charlie at RPM Motors, are a few that come to mind and can give you info on what it takes to tune and pass smog. On this thread the question of the biggest allowable cam that actually passed
without major issues or those such as is the case with the LG G5XE-1 that was designed to pass emissions is what we are looking for.
