Default Coolant Leak

My 2000 MN6 coupe has been intermittently leaking coolant. It doesn't appear to be coming from the radiator as the leak appears to originate further back from the radiator. I haven't noticed any fluid leaking around the reservoir cap either. The leak is not constant. I know it's coolant because of the consistency of the fluid and I have had to add more coolant to the reservoir. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I would like to try to fix it myself and only take it to a shop as a last resort.

I had the same problem on my 2000 MN6. If you run your hand under the thermostat housing you should feel some coolant. Mine had a strong odor too after a long drive. I took mine to the dealer (service contract) they told me that it was the water pump gasket. They replaced the water pump and gasket. I remember the service manager telling me something about a service bulletin regarding the gasket separating and causing a leak not 100% sure.

Good Luck

I forgot to ask. Where is the thermostat located?

Passengers side towards the bottom of the motor (front).

It's bone dry right now. Just completed a 175 mile trip about 2 hours ago. It hasn't leaked any fluid since I filled the reservoir yesterday. It can go days without leaking and then I will see a big puddle. Is this similar to your situation?

If it does not leak all the time, my guess would be the water pump seal is failing. They can leak off and on, then one day, coolant will pour out. See if you can tell if any fluid is coming from behind the pulley where the weep hole is.

I will check that tomorrow. Funny thing is when I went out to check it after I said it hadn't leaked yet, there was a small puddle on the ground. Thanks for you advice.

On my '99, the water pump started leaking a little and I didn't know it, a few years ago. I was in San Diego when I got a low coolant alarm. Replaced the coolant and no problem for another week, then on the way to work, I got the alarm again. Arriving at work, I see it dripping out of the water pump bearing/seal. Nice when I'm 70 miles from home. Cost me dearly at the dealership to have them replace plus a rental car for one night. I believe I had to shell out over $750 for that repair.

Yes, I had the same problem. I would get the pump and the gasket. Because you know if you just replace the gasket the pump will fail a month from now. I'm told it's a simple task to replace the pump and gasket. THe Chevy Dealer will charge around $700.00 for the complete repair.

Good Luck, Bill

Default Overflow tank?

Check the overflow tank. Mine had a pinhole leak on the top at the joint where the hose is attached.

My bet would be the water pump. Not sure of your mileage but at 60K, I started losing coolant from the overflow tank - it was a very small leak from the water pump shaft that was evaporating from the engine heat so no drips on the floor.

I have 80K on the clock. I'm ordering a water pump and gasket to see if that fixes the situation. Hate to have it dump all the coolant at once when I'm far away from home. Really appreciate the timely and appropriate advice everyone shares here on the forum.

You might check the plastic inlet and outlet tubes that the rubber hoses clamp to on the overflow tank. Mine got a small crack in one and was leaking fluid.
