Default noise from the rear

And i dont mean gas! hey need alittle help i just bought a 2000 m6 z51 all options car that has 36000 on it but i am hearing a noise when i take off. i have owned many sports cars but this is my first vette. so i dont know if this is normal. i do know the through out bearing is bad cause it rattles abit if the car is in n and the clutch is out. and clutch is weak (my guess is prev. owner was a woman LOL ) plans are in place for a new one as soon as my mech. clears a spot in his garage. the noise is only in first gear that i can hear and only happens as the clutch is fully released if the clutch is in at all i dont hear it. i also hear it ever now and again in first if i am breaking to the point that it is bogging the engine. any help from u guys would be great
thanx
Brett

This sounds like the "marbles-in-a-can" noise all MN6/M12 owners experience on soft take-offs. Take off aggressively and you won't hear it. This is due to the rear-mounted tranny configuration.

Ken of VetteShop, a GM Cert. Tech sent me this explanation a few years ago:

The marbles in a can or "gear rattle" in neutral with the clutch released is caused by the mainshaft in the transmission rotating with no load upon it. Because the trans is rearward, when you release the clutch (even in neutral) the drive shaft and trans mainshaft are turning (free wheeling). When you press in the clutch, the drive shaft and trans mainshaft stop rotating, stopping the noise. The manual trans uses ATF that, when hot, is thinner than water and has poor noise dampening quality compared to gear oil.
You may also hear a "clank" noise when releasing the clutch rapidly in neutral. This is simply caused by the clutch engaging the stationary drive shaft.
