Took my 2000 in as the fuel gauge was somewhat erratic. They determined the sending unit in (only) the left tank was bad. The tech said "it's usually the left sending unit that causes problems". They are replacing the L/H sender under warranty approx. $1100.00 (GMPP which expires on the 23rd) If I wanted to pay (out of pocket) for the R/H unit to be R&R'd at the same time it would be approx. $600 What would you do? Am I getting the straight info.?Thanks in advance.

In most cases, the gas tank sending units in C5's, especially the one in the tank that empties first start sticking due to the additives contained in gasoline ("it's just their nature")...so you get erratic readings. Most of us with this problem...cure it by putting in a "20gal. size" bottle of TECHRON (by Chevron) available at most Auto Stores, every 2 or three gas fill-ups. Initially, it may take 2 consectutive fill ups with Techron to sufficiently clean/free up that sticky sending unit, but it does work...99.9% of the time. A good habit for those not filling up until near empty AND not driving daily... is to re-fuel (fill up) before the first tank emptys out. Anyway, use Techron every-other or 3rd fill up and you should not have this issue.

Straight and hard. If they ask you to bend over, don't do it. When the tech says the left side sender fails most often, is he referring to the driver or passenger side? Most of the discussions I have read here and elsewhere dealt more with the sender on the passenger side. If the tech was referring to the driver's side failing most often, that would seem inconsistent with what others, especially oin this forum, have found to be the case.

I also agree with Charlie:

If its costing you nothing to do the one under GMPP, let them do it but DONT pay for the other one....
I never really considered whether the service writer was refering to the passenger side. He said it was the L/H side so I assumed he meant behind the driver. I'll double check. He did mention approx. 8 1/2 hrs. book time and that the tank had to be removed.
Dont pay for the other one, filling up with Cheveron 93 and using seafoam or techron with a fill up every few tanks will prevent the problem, heck I havent used seafoam or techron for 7 months and it has not come back (knock on wood) we dont have Cheveron here so I always use Shell 91.
