other than disconnecting hoses and watering the driveway

The procedure follows:


Draining and Filling Cooling System

Caution
With a pressurized cooling system, the coolant temperature in the radiator can be considerably higher than the boiling point of the solution at atmospheric pressure. Removal of the surge tank cap, while the cooling system is hot and under high pressure, causes the solution to boil instantaneously with explosive force. This will cause the solution to spew out over the engine, the fenders, and the person removing the cap. Serious bodily injury may result.

Important
If the procedure below is not followed a low or high coolant level condition and/or vehicle damage could result.


1) Park the vehicle on a level surface.
2) Remove the surge tank cap:
3)Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
4) Place a drain pan under the drain plug.
5) Open the radiator drain plug .
6) Allow the cooling system to drain completely.
7) Inspect the engine coolant for the following:
Discolored -- follow the flush procedure below.
Normal in appearance -- continue with the next step.

Notice
When adding coolant, use DEX-COOL® coolant. If silicated coolant is added to the system, premature engine, heater core or radiator corrosion may result. In addition, the engine coolant will require change sooner-at 50 000 km (30,000 mi) or 24 months.

Notice
Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.


8) Close the radiator drain plug. Tighten.
Tighten the radiator drain plug to 2 N•m (18 lb in).

9) Fill the cooling system through the surge tank.
10) Fill the cooling system with a 50/50 mixture of DEX-COOL® coolant and deionized water.
11) Start the engine.
12) Allow the engine to idle for 1 minute.
13) Install surge tank cap.
14) Cycle the engine RPMs from idle to 3000 in 30 second intervals until the coolant temperature reaches 99°C (210°F).
15)Shut off the engine.
16) Remove the surge tank cap.
17) Start the engine.
18) Allow the engine to Idle for 1 minute. Fill the surge tank to 12.7 mm (0.5 in) above the COLD FULL mark on the surge tank.
19) Install the surge tank cap.
20) Cycle the engine RPMs from idle to 3000 in 30 second intervals until the coolant reaches 99°C (210°F).
21) Shut off the engine.
22) Remove the surge tank cap.
23) Top off the coolant as necessary, 12.7 mm (0.5 in) above FULL COLD mark on the surge tank.
24) Rinse away any excess coolant from the engine and the engine compartment.
25) Inspect the concentration of the engine coolant.
26) Install the surge tank cap.

It's on the lower RH (passenger) side facing the rear. You'll need a 1/4" square drive like a nut driver or a 1/4" drive extension to fit the square opening it has. It only requires a 1/4 turn to the left. If it drains too slowly, use a pair of needle nosed pliers to pull it all the way out.

I just changed the coolant in my 01 vette.(factory coolant) I followed the instructions per ron222 thread dated 6/6/07( Observe the safety pre cautions when opening the surge tank cap on a hot engine.) I had the rear of the car 4" higher than the front.The only deviation from his instructions was I turned the surge cap counterclockwise until I saw the coolant flow speed up (didn,t remove the cap completely) & I used a bucket that was indexed in quarts. So I was draining 2 gals.of coolant & adding 2 gals of distilled water. Changed the water inlet housing(Thermostat & inlet are one assembly) when the radiator tank was empty. A convenient time to do it & without a lot of coolant spillage. Torqued the 2 bolts to 89" lbs.When your under the car check the a/c condenser & the radiator for dirt ,plastic bags, leafs or any other obstuctions which could interfere with air flow. My coolant temps run at 187 to 190f while driving & 210 to 220 f while at idle.Outside air temp was 85 f. Use ron222 method & you won,t have any problems.note: I didn,t have any air trapped in the system because of opening the surge cap( I didn,t remove it until I needed to refill.Inlet housing from gm $44.05 I hope this helps. When you drain the system (line 6), does all the coolant (11.4 qts) drain out of both the radiator and the engine block? If only the radiator drains, and you refill with 50/50, won't you end up with a coolant in the complete system that is half new and half old DexCool/water? It seems that if only the radiator drains, you would need to refill with water, warm engine to the point that the thermastat opens and then drain again. Fill with water, warm engine and drain, repete for a third time, then add ~6 qts of DexCool and finish fill with distilled water. On all other cars I've changed the coolant on, opening the radiator draincock only drains the radiator, not the complete system and mulitiple fills with water and drains are required to flush all of the old coolant from the system.

Joe, You are correct. You will not get it all out of the block with one drain. You can refill and with water and flush a few more times until it runs clear.

A somewhat related question; yesterday I tried to open the surge tank cap, and it seemed to be stuck... Should I force it open with plyers or something?

No, do not use pliers and do not force it..

Use a strap wrench or a 3/8 inch rubber hose. Wrap either around the cap tightly and rotate in a counter clockwise directon...

HTH


When using the 1/4"" square drive to not turn it to much. All you have to do is turn it a half turn(or so) and pull out a little to drain. If you try to unscrew it all the way you will end up buying a new one.
