Means the SDM (the module that controls the airbags) is not responding when you ask the systems to list their codes. If the SDM is not communicating with the other modules, your SIR light should be on and the airbag system is disabled.

The SIR light is not on. I removed the airbag to replace the steering wheel. Would this cause the code to appear?

How do I get it to reset?

Just access the code in manual diagnostics mode on your dash(I assume this is how you checked the code). Go to the code and press the reset button on your dash.

Based on your comment that you removed the air bag you should see a code of B0026 (Circuit Open) however, you also state the On Board Diagnostics indicate the SDM module isn't communicating with the system so you may have lost the module (let the smoke out of it) while playing around with the air bag.

Bill,

"Let the smoke out of it" what does that mean and how do I fix it?

Bill's saying you MAY have damaged the SDM when you played with the airbag. The SDM is designed so that if it thinks an airbag has "fired", the SDM is PERMANENTLY locked. If it is locked, it has to be replaced. Also, replacement requires a Tech2 as the SDM has to have the vehicle's VIN number programmed in it, and the BCM has to be updated with the new SDM's SIR serial number. If these steps aren't taken a B1001 will set and the airbag system will be disabled until the problem is fixed.
