Default Intermittant Signals

My friend's 2000 has some kind of bug in the signals. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't (same for the flashers). I checked all the typical things like exposed wires, bulbs, connections, but found nothing wrong. My friend that works on GMC's said it sounds like the module in the steering column is messed up. He also said they replace them all the time in the trucks for similar issues. Chevy called it a "volume module" priced at $368 for the part . I tried looking it up on parts sites but only came up with "electronic control module" that averaged $175 and needs to be flashed.

Anyone else had this type of problem with their car? I tried the search, but didn't come up with this.

Try a search - this is one of the most common problems out there. The new module is about 30 bucks at the dealer and it's not in the steering column - the emergency flasher switch is actually part of the module that you need to replace. To do this job, you need to remove the center console, radio trim plate, and radio. Then, pull the flasher button off the module, depress the clip on the bottom of the module and whack it back into the dash with a screw driver. Pull the module out through the hole where the radio was, unplug it, plug in the new one and reinstall everything in reverse. You're done. The record is probably around 15 or 20 minutes. Should take a first timer about 35, if you have all the tools.
