Default Difference between head stud kit and main stud kit?

I am looking at getting some ARP bolts for my upcoming head and cam project. What's the difference between the head stud kit(234-4317) and main stud kit(234-5608), and which one do I buy?TIA

I you are changing the heads use the head stud kit. The main studs are for your crankshaft main bearing caps. Keep in mind I dont think you can install or remove your heads with the stud kit with the motor in the car because of clearance issues. If it were me I would upgrade to new ARP head bolts.

Sure you can, there's plenty of clearance to slide the heads on over the studs.

So are you guys saying that I should buy the head stud kit? I was going to buy the harmonic balancer bolt for the asp pulley. While I'm in their, any other(crank?) ARP bolts I should buy?

Hey Jason,

I talked with you on the Lone Pine run a few weeks ago and if I remember right your doing heads and cam, nothing in the bottom end. No need for Main studs then. If you want to use studs for the heads then yep, get the head stud kit. The only stock bolts you can’t use over on a LS1 head and cam swap are the head bolts and the crank/balancer bolt.

Hi Ron
Yes you are correct, not doing anything on the bottom end. ARP had sent me an email saying to buy the main stud kit. I was about ready to get the head stud kit, so the email had me confused. I have a friend of a friend who works for ARP, so I only want to bother them one time. Hopefully I'll be getting a deal! Hope all is well with you.
