Default Help me develop a plan of future MODS

I've read, researched, etc. most of the forum topics and am trying to develop a plan for future modifications. Currently I have the Donaldson Filter and Corsa Indy's. I'm hoping for a STREET LEGAL car, that would be as comfortable as a daily drive as on the track. I'm not looking for any particular dyno #'s but would look for a 1/4 mile somewhere around 12.2-12.4. After much consideration, here's my list. Please feel free to comment on what to do first or any changes you would make. I know this opens up the topic a bit but I want a consensus :D.

In no particular order:
1. A modest Heads/Cam package
2. Headers (leaning toward TPIS)
3. Rear 3.42 gear/ SuperYank 3500 TC
4. LS6 Intake manifold

Possible bolt on's, just not sure of impact
1. MAF
2. MAFT
3. Air Bridge/Coupler
4. Trottle Body
5. Underdrive pulleys
6. Programer (Hypertech, TTS Powerloader???)

Thanks for the imput

dah

I think I'd only do headers once and put the money saved into something else. ;) (Sorry, I couldn't resist.)

Chosing the right mod path is very important. You only want to buy things once, and you want your performance to be accumulative. Way too many times I have seen people have to buy things twice because they did not buy the right thing in the first place to go along with their future modifications. Also, there are a lot of bolt on mods out there that really do not do anything worthwhile in my mind.

This would be my mod path on an A4 car..

1. Cold Air Intake (Performance)
2. Exhaust System (Performance/Sound/Looks)
3. YANK 3500 and 3.42 gears (Performance)
4. Powerloader PCM Programmer (Performance)
5. TTS Long Tube Headers (Performance/Sound)
6. LS6 Intake Manifold
7. Stage II Heads/Cam Package (Performance/Sound)
8. Ported Throttlebody
9. 178 Thermostat

Matt,

Thanks for the input. That's why my first mod was the Blackwing (I didn't want to cut the shroud) followed by the Corsa. I'm torn between doing the gears/torque converter (without the programmer to start) or the headers. With the path as you have outlined, would any of these mods be done in conjunction (to save install cost or does it make sense to do them together)?

dah

Well, if you did the headers at the same time as the heads/cam package, they would be installed for free because of how easy it is to do when the heads are off the engine. The install place may charge a few bucks for the welding of the long tubes to the rest of your exhaust but it would definitely save you some cash.

Also, I know most tuners will port your throttlebody for free when you get them to install a heads/cam package as well.

As far as gears and converter, they should definitely be done at the same time.

I think I would go with the gears/converter before Long Tube headers. I know the performance difference would be much more noticable with the gears/converter than just the long tubes.

Will I need the programmer with the gear/TC upgrade? It seems that you would have to. If so, TTS Powerloader or Hypertech?

Thanks

Yes on an A4 you would need the programming for the gear changes. I would highly recommend doing the Powerloader as it has the best transmission managment system around. Steve Cole put a lot of R&D into getting the shift points and firmness just right for performance and drivability. He also does some programming to get the most out of your Torque Converter as well.

I guess I should have stated that you do the Powerloader at the same time as the converter/gears.

We have sold a few hundred Powerloaders now to forum members and everyone has been very impressed with the results.

Matt is right-on with his comments. I would go with the 3.42's, SY3500, & Powerloader first. That combo will give you a significant improvement in performance. After that, get better tires for traction. Just remember, once you start on the engine with heads & cam, you loose the GM 'engine' warranty, so make sure you use a tuner who provides warranty protection.

Just started modifying my '99 6-speed hardtop. My first step would be tyres, I've replaced the emt tyres with Bridgestone S 02s as the emt's are quite awful tyres imho. On order at the moment are Donaldson Blackwing intake, Vortex power duct and Granatelli MAF.

1: Change tyres(bear in mind future engine mods for improved traction)
2: Air filter (cold air preferable, unless you live in the UK like me where it is always cold anyway)
3: Power duct
4: MAF unit
5: ? (headers, axle, clutch/torque convertor, cam/heads & intake)

For my own next step, I will wait until I have installed my new bits first. I am unsure at present wether to fit a new exhaust system as most info I have read basically states that the hp gains with fitting an aftermarket exhaust are not much over the stock system and for me, cash spent needs to be making hp.

Ordered the Powerloader :D I couldn't resist.

Will wait until spring for the 3.42/Sy3500 combo (bad roads make it tough to hook up), then a new wheel/tire combo.

I'm looking at going 18" all round, Nitto 285/45/18's.

Thanks to all for your help. for Matt/ Exit 28 for his support.

Ran my first 1/4 at 13.021 at 107.13...looking forward to 12's real soon :yesnod:
