I was reaqding about multiple spark coils. I noticed that MSD makes a set for the LSx engines.
Do they offer any performance improvements?
I ask this because I know in the diesel engine world, electronics led to the advent of multiple fuel injections per power stroke. This led to a host of good things for diesel performance, etc.
So I was wondering if there are any similar gains to multiple sparks in the gas engine world..........
I put a set of the MSD coils on my '98 heavily modded C5 and didn't see any performance gain at all--I replaced the coils because on my last dyno run the Tq & HP curves were very bumpy between 5000 & 6200 -The dyno shop said it looked like a high RPM ignition miss-The coils did eliminate the wavy curves---but so could have new stock coils too----Basically they are there just for the "bling" factor--they look really cool !!!!
I put them on my 80,000 mile car and noticed the car ran much smoother at idle I didn't notice any HP"seat of the pants" increase If you have an "extra" 600 bucks laying around go for it.
The multi strike feature can make a difference in idle, but in a coil-near-plug/coil-on-plug application they are definitely not needed.
Ford has a multi strke ignition system on there mod motors. At least the 4.6 is. They did it because of idle issues, supposedly due to inefficient combustion chamber design.
