I've made the decision to go with a new intake system, but want to minimize the risk of hydrolock in doing it. If I don't want to cut the shroud or put in the front air screens, what intake system would you guys recommend?
Re: Best Air Intake without Cutting Shroud? (Sniper168gr)
Repeat after me... Donaldson Blackhawk and Vortex Power Duct. :yesnod:
I second that but I prefer the LAPD Powerduct (I just didn't like the writing down the side on the Vortex) I would also descreen the MAF while its apart.
Re: Best Air Intake without Cutting Shroud? (2k Monster)
No Powerduct... unless you like paying $180-300 for 0-3hp.
For underhood- I would go with one of the following, K&N panel $50 (replacement type) and lid $0-$70, or K&N cone filter bolted onto MAFT ($50), or if money is no concern a Donaldson $230.
Re: Best Air Intake without Cutting Shroud? (2k Monster)
Having just purchased my C5 last Friday, I'm allready looking into replacing the restrictive factory airbox. My question to those with the "Donaldson's" is how much hot air do you feel is making its way into the intake? I see that 99Corvette has a hood seal listed in his mods, is this at the front of the hood to prevent the hot air from making it into the intake? Thanks
Re: Best Air Intake without Cutting Shroud? (2k Monster)
Just wondering, everyone seems to like the blackwing the best. Is there something wrong with the RM Twin Flow ( I thought looked  ) or the Granetelli dual cone air filter? I thought the dual cones looked cool, but it seems like no is getting either of these. Well, I was about to order one, but now I am having doubts as to which air system to get.
Re: Best Air Intake without Cutting Shroud? (2k Monster)
K&n gen II FIPK from Westcoast or LAPD. Great Mod and a good compromise of cutting the shrud (you dont have to cut a hole, you just cut three sides and bent it down a bit - No water problems so far). Great sound and you can tell the difference in hp gain !
Re: Best Air Intake without Cutting Shroud? (2k Monster)
I agree with the guys and for the money the K&N is the best.. but would take a quick look at Ken Fitchners pages for the new GM LS6 intake for the Z06.. for $45.00 for materials you can add about 15 rhp to your LS1 and do the installation in 10 mins.. I have a buddy that did and it is a life saver.. I have mine incoming now... If they do it in the new 405hp Z06 then I think it would be a good cheap ungrade that would still make your car original looking without all the work and cost.. for the price it is worth it..
