OK, I give up and am feeling quite dumb on how to get to the fuel filter?
The book says drop the stabilizer bar and driver side muffler??? I thought this was a less than 1 hour operation. How have you folks done this operation? Is it hard to work with just up on ramps? I cannot see any to get to it without taking off a lot of stuff. Help appreciated!
Thanks guys, gonna try to start using that search feature again!
I may weenie out on this one, since I've got some warranty stuff to
get done too, but at least I know what's involved!
I have another question about the fuel filter. After reading this topic yesterday I went out and looked through the maintenance schedule in the owner's manual and unless I am blind it never mentions changing the fuel filter at any service interval. I know it needs to be changed at some point in time but where are folks getting this 15K miles figure? I can't imagine that the fuel filter would need to be changed so frequently, how about some documentation from GM that states this needs to be done at what intervals on the C5.
You're right, it says "if it gets a restriction". I've been told that the "oxygenated" fuel (generally in large metropolitan areas) is hard on
the filtering element(s). I'm thinking it can't hurt at 50K miles; I'm also
doing the A4 tranny fluid, power steering fluid, coolant, and brake fluids,
tho I'm having no problems. I noticed the power steering fluid was slightly darker than "new" stuff". The book says 100K, but no way I'm keeping fluids that long.
Lets talk about how fuel filters work for a second...:seeya
Fuel filters are a regular maintenance item and 15,000 miles is probably a safe number for a daily city driven car. The reason is based on the filter technology...the filter pulls out dirt and contaminants from the fuel as well as water particles that may be in the mix. There is always a very small amount of contaminants and water in regular pump gas. Changing every 15k may seem too often for you, however the alternative is less favorable.
When a fuel filter gets "full" or when enough water and contaminant particles build up, the filter element becomes hard inside the filter. Performance goes down slowly as this occurs and is usually not noticeable until you change it out and see all the power return. The worst case situation is that an old filter will begin "passing" water and contaminants because the filter is full and hard. This can cause major damage to the engine.
I would rather buy the cheap fuel filter and replace it every 15k-20k than deal with engine problems later on. The filter has quick disconnects and can be done in 20 minutes on a lift with the proper disconnect tool.
I'm starting to agree.....I'm sure that this contributed to my dirty injectors, and bad "air check valve"...(see other post on DIC codes).
It was foolish to think "regular maintenance" items would be different on the C5!
Thanks
Now is the best time of the year to do this maintenance as well. Cold weather can make matters worse (ie-water freezes). And I agree with you Larry...the C5 is a great car but it is still a car and maintenance is still important...things like oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs, pcv valve and a little fuel injector cleaner from time to time are still necessary. Also, the basic checks of fluid levels for clutch, brakes, tranny, power steering and coolant. In addition, common intervals for brake fluid, tranny fluid, and clutch fluid is 2 years or 30k, whichever comes first.
Always keep in mind that the harder you drive a car (drag racing, etc) the more often these intervals should occur. For example, 100k spark plugs will last about 30k if you race frequently.
So you have already changed yours out then? Did you do it yourself? I'm at 27K miles and I have no problem doing it now I just didn't see anything from GM that stated it needed to be done.
Perhaps you could help me change mine in the near future.
Keep in mind that starting in '99 MY G.M moved the fuel regulator to the back of the car and made it part of the fuel fillter as a single non servicing part.
Now replacing filter means also replacing the whole unit and the filiter cost is more like $50 !
Does anyone have a part number for the filter or filter/regulator since I have a '99??
Thanks! :p:
Look up Vettester, he replaced his about 1 month ago.
Keep in mind the 3 fuel ines on the reg/filter are quick disconnects but as Steve found out one end needs a special tool to remove that line and without the tool his line broke off. :smash:
Mark
You are the savior today ;) How many miles you got on that baby now :) ?
Keith, she is coming up on 18K. Doing well so far.....damn those GY RF's are noisy bastards. (NO SURPRISE THERE.) Did some work on the Z-28, for use this winter, when the roads aren't deemed worthy for my Vette.
Wow! You guys are making this sound like brain surgury. You can get the part at any Pep Boys, AutoZone, or O'Reilly(sp) auto parts store. All you will need to know is the year and that your car is a vette  . They will probably have to special order it and yes it is a little pricey (probably because they know that vette guys will pay a little more). And yes, you must have the quick disconnect tool to remove the line to the front. The other 2 on the rear have snaps. There is also a ground wire strap that is a simple 10mm bolt (I think 10mm). It is located in the center tunnel just in front of the rear differential, drivers side (this is for a 2000 with 6-speed)(If that makes a difference). I recommend a lift but I would bet you could do it in your driveway. I will be doing mine in Dec of this year at its 30k tune-up. If you guys want we can have a group hug at someones house that has a lift in San Antonio. I would be happy to help out...besides I only figured this out by asking people on the forum a year ago. Email me at sa_knight@yahoo.com
December would work for me, I'll be close to 30K by then. Perhaps we could use Bob's lift since I know that he has one, I think Arnold was gonna get one too but not sure if it is in yet. BTW, are you gonna be at the BBQ on Saturday?
