Recently I've been experiencing power steering "lag". It generally happens after driving the car at highway speeds and when I attempt to exit an offramp during braking. The steering wheel becomes very stiff forcing me to "muscle" through the steering maneuver.
So recently I took my 02 cpe to the dealer. The mechanic did diagnstic tests on both the power steering pump and magnesteer system, but found nothing! Then after my insistence, he test drove it on a local highway, but found nothing wrong with it.
Man this sounds like what I just had after replacing my rack for a major leak. I replaced the PS rack all the PS hoses and put on a new pump.
The steering was stiff as all get out. As it turns out my belts were also squeaking but I could still drive the car. A couple of days later I replaced the belts and now its ok.

Thanks Dave for the reply. I am trying to get this done with my extended warranty coverage, but I need a verifiable diagnosis before they'll pay. I think I may have to take the car while it's happening. Maybe then we can get it done. Stay tuned!
