Default 01 oil consumption

I have an 01 with 77k miles a-4
My low oil message came up yesterday.
I did my last oil change about 2-3 months back and my DIC says 76% oil life.

I checked the stick and it says add so I add a bit of oil and am good to go.

my question is... Is this problem worth letting the dealer tear into the engine to fix? I have GMPP major guard, but I don't want to let them do any unnecessary thing to the engine.

Some 01s had ring issues which cause small amounts of oil to slip by at rpms above 3000.(There is a TSB on this one) I would just monitor it closely and see how quickly it goes down.
I have also been told on the 2001 and newer the dipstick is in the middle of the grid when you have 6.5 qts(the recommended amount in the manual) If you fill to the top line you get 7qts. I have not been able to verify this, but many on the forum say it is true.

The amount of oil which I added was not too much maybe 1/2 qt.
I believe it has been about 1500 miles since the oil change.

I would just check it in another 1000 or 1500 miles and see if it goes down again. The place might have put in 6.5 qts oil as the manual recommends and the dipstick didn't show full.

When you check it in 1000-1500 miles and there is very little or no consumption, then I would probably leave it alone. Assuming that it is the common ring problem, they would have to tear down into the engine, which could causes more problems if they don't do good work.

GM will not consider the car an "oil burner" unless it uses a quart in LESS than 1,000 miles.

You DO NOT have an "oil burner". With 77k miles on the engine, 1/2 quart in 1500 miles sounds like normal usage to me.

Guess I've been lucky with mine. I have literally no oil consumption whatsoever. However, mine was produced in July '01 so it was extreme end of year. Wonder if the problem was fixed by then.

How do you find your build date?

Not that I've seen mine as I've never looked... but I thought it'd be on the sticker with the tire pressures.

I don't think they'd consider that excessive even if you did want them to work on it, there is a TSB out there for that issue though.

My 2k1 does burn a little bit, think I'm going to try the redesigned PCV (made for the 5.3L with the oil consumption issue in mind) and fix my dead oil pressure sensor before I get to concerned where the oil is going. In either case I'm around a quart for 2-3k miles, so it isn't that much.

Please read "sticky notes" in C5 General section about weights, measurements etc. under oil woes.
Most of all shift up and stop driving around with the rpm's over 3,200 while in town. You are in a high rpm no load situation.

Your build date is on the a sticker on the driver's door. It is the sticker that says the car meets all applicable Federal/state laws when built. It shows your VIN and the month/year it was built.
