I have a 98 c5 and the gas gauge will sit on empty with a full tank.
I heard that you can put a cleaner in the tank to clean the sensor? Is this a normal problem for early c5s??
I only used CHEVRON in my '99 coupe and it happened a bunch of times. When the car was under warranty, the dealership replaced the float sensors in the gas tanks and it went away. As per usual, the warranty expired and a year later the guage went to E on a full tank again. Now it reads different false readings once in a while.
Here is a quick fix if the needle is stuck on E and you know you have fuel in the tank. Park the car on a steep grade with the nose facing down. Turn the car off and start it back up. The fuel moves to the front of the tanks, relieving the level sensors, allowing them to adjust again. It works 99% of the time for me. A little ghetto but effecient.
I too have a 98 C5 and experienced the same problem. Techron did not seem to have much of an affect however Seafoam cured the problem. As a sidebar, the Seafoam also improved idle quality and eliminated pinging.

This is a problem for most all C5s...first tank (of the 2 tanks) empties out first..sensor drys out with gas additives accumulating on it . It sticks. We hardly ever fill up until close to empty...leaving that first tank dry for long time. For your next 3 fill ups...put a "20gal." bottle of Techron in 1st....then every third fill-up, put one in ....this stops this problem in most cases.
I used techron additive as a preventave deal for the gas gauge (it was working fine for 7 months) and about 50 miles later the gas gauge dropped to empty , weird, I put seafoam in on the next gas fill-up and 15 mins later gas gauge is working again. The next day it did it again and I deleted the code on the dic and its working again. We dont have cheverons here so I only use 91 Shell.
I wonder why the 10% ethanol additive with it's cleaning effect wouldn't prevent this problem. Or is it Ethanol causing this problem by sending all the crap it cleaned from the tank toward the floats? I run Sunoco 93 all the time...
I had a 24 Skater Powerboat, I decided to sell when they started adding ethanol cause some of my friends with Skaters (epoxy fuel cells) started having problems with their fuel cells dissovling and sending all the crap into their fuel injectors.

Try Techron first ... it is specially formulated to deal with this problem, they specifically mention it in the product sheets ...... the issue is sulpher deposits on the fuel sender.
Ok will do. Can't find a Napa with Seafoam in my convenient travels anyway and the auto parts store on the way to work has Techron so I'll get some tomorrow.
Today the gauge seemed to work on the way to work then dropped out again on the way home.
