I have a '97 M6 Coupe that's getting a Heads/Cam swap here shortly. She has 78k Miles on her and i had a quick question about the bottom end.
When i throw on the H/C package the top of the engine will be mostly new. (New Ported LS6 Heads Valves & Rockers, Lifters, Push Rods, Springs, Cam, etc etc) And since I'm going with the Torquer V2 (232/234 .595/.598) I Figured i could bump my redline to 6500.
Is there any reliability concerns with raising the Redline to 6500 for the bottom end of the car? The LS1 and LS6 shortblocks are the same right? So this engine should be ok at 6500?
The block sould be able to take it, the first thing I'd be concerned about is rod failure, but I don't know how strong they are from the factory. I would think a small bump in rpm won't make that much of a difference, but that combined w/ the extra power might put you towards the edge.
A lot of folks feel that the rod bolts begin to stretch and eventually fail at engine speeds over 6500rpm. Other people disagree and run them higher. I err on the side of caution and run mine to 6500rpm.
my 01 is engine stock and I had the tuner change my rpm limit to 6500. Run it up there all the time too! No problems to report, and the sound is great! Did this with my 00 Camaro as well, but like you, I did a H/C swap with headers. Not much HP up there, however.
