No snide comments please. I have a 04 A4 and sometimes I like to run thru the gears manually. Its fun but I am glad I don’t have to do it all the time. I don’t have a paddle shifter or anything like that just 1 2 3 D. (I don’t even know if they offer a paddle shifter for these cars) The question is can I do any damage running through the gears manually. Can I drive the car hard doing this or is that not recommended. It's mostly so I can play with the sound of my Borla Stingers.
I've heard that its not all that good on the trans to do it that way--but you'll find people on both sides of the issue so i can't really say for sure----I do know that I drove my own A4 thru the 1/4 --once shifting manually and then shifting with the computer---and i have to say the computer did a far better job than I--was 2 tenths quicker---and i have over 1000 runs under my belt---its really easy to mess-up the 1-2
shift as it comes so fast--i would either miss it or short shift
This subject has been discussed before - do a search. I would think It would not hurt it but over time it may wear out the linkage to the tranny. I had an old celica that I shifted manually (A4) every day for 5 years with no problem (the car was a dog unless I did the shifting). I do shift mine C5 (A4) somtimes to get the corsa sound and to feel the power but not as much as I use to. If you enjoy shifting manually then I would say go for it.
I am just like you, don't want a 6-speed, but do like to shift the gears once in a while, I have been doing it for about a year now and have not notice any issues. Plus if I want to shift gears I jump in my 68 and throw them around all day

Don't worry dude, I have an '04 A4 at home too and I do the same thing on occasion. The only thing you are damaging is your fuel economy, but I don't think you care about that too much
