Default 6 Speed

Whats the best way to take off ( normal driving ) with the 6 Speed? I just picked up an 01 and havn't driven a shift in 12 years. Also what is the best way to launch it for a 1/4 mile run?

Thanks

The best way to get the car to go is to let the clutch out!
The engine has so much torque, it is difficult to kill the engine if you let the clutch out smoothly.
My Z06 does not even bog down when I start out in second gear.

C5s are great stick cars. It'll literally come back to you in minutes. Just a little off idle, ease out the clutch, and you'll move on out.

Keep rpms between 1200-1500 after your shift to figure out your shift points.

Launching at a strip, starting out I'd be a bit more aggressive off the line and shift normally when the tach goes above 6,000. Main thing is to have fun!

HTH, and have a good one,
Mike

You are going to think I'm being smart but the answers are:

- 1st gear, normal driving (it will try to shift you from 1st to 4th so get on the gas alittle hard). I usually don't use sixth gear unless on the highway above 65.
- For drag racing the best thing to do is figure out where you can side-step the clutch and get on the gas but not spin the tires too much to reduce speed or bog. Depending on the tires this might be touchy.

What I was kinda looking for was there any RPM to look for when pulling out in first. I don't have any problem shifting, and have yet to see the 1 to 4 light.

Thanks

You just need to go on some rides and try different launch methods. Try a little gas, a little more gas, and then a Lot of gas... Report back..

That really depends on the conditions. Level surface, normal acceleration, 12-1500 rpm will do. You can even pull out without touching the gas at all; the engine will try to maintain idle rpm (800, IIRC), and will add enough throttle to pull you away. Obviously that's not normal, but it just shows the flexability in the system.

Up a hill, obviously you'll need more. Down a hill, maybe none. Like I said, it all depends.

Have a good one,
Mike

If you have a HUD it has a nifty "Shift" light. I find It is good for maximum acceleration.

For drag racing I usually hold at 3500 rpms with clutch in. When last yellow light goes, pop the clutch an floor it.

Thanks, LoneStarFRC.

Here are a couple links to get Normseven going: General Launch Techniques

Taking Care of Your Clutch

It's an adventure doing max acceleration in a Corvette, whether on the street or the drag strip. Correct technique gets stronger acceleration, less breakage, and fewer issues.
